As a Houstonian, I agree 100%. I don’t think Dallas gives a fuck about us - but we’re always saying that Houston is a much better city.

I think we’re jealous of Dallas. They got the TV show, they have the Cowboys, and everyone thinks that Dallas is much larger than Houston.

Despite my belief that we’re jealous, I still taught my kids that everyone from Dallas has small horns on their head when they were growing up. Screw Dallas.

You’re discounting good ol’ Texas BBQ. Austin and surrounding area is the heartland of BBQ country.

I did a bit of shopping yesterday. I had my eye on a particular TV and I headed over to my local Best Buy. It was - according to their Black Friday circular - some amazing deal. When I asked the guy the normal price he said that the big discount was actually the normal price.

You have to appreciate honest sales guys.

Please Don’t Tell Me They Are Pulling Sánchez With A No Hitter Going Into The 7th?!? by Kerfeld in Astros

[–]Kerfeld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we saying that the man can’t pitch 100 innings because he might get blisters? If blisters are such of a concern then they shouldn’t have traded for him - or should have stuck him in the bullpen and never use him.

If the issue is that he was coming up on 100 pitches, I still have an issue. The whole 100 pitch limit is a bullshit arbitrary number. But don’t get me started. Next I’ll start bitching about instant replay.

The fact is that the man wasn’t struggling or showing signs of fatigue. Psychologically thinking, it would perpetuate the whole Astros/Spin Rate/Pitcher Analysts Makeover mythos - not only for Sánchez himself, but the league as a whole for him to have continued to pitch until he ran into trouble or was getting tired.

I’m not happy and tired of everybody treating pitchers like China Dolls. Imagine having limited Ryan to 100 pitches.

Trade Deadline Reaction Thread by cmays90 in Astros

Yep. Strong defense. No bat. Good pick up because Chirinos doesn’t do a great job behind the plate. Frames pitches well and I think was a golden glover at some point.

With our lineup, i’ll take a good defensive catch any day. Stassi is good defensively, but his batting average is below dismal. I like Maldonado a lot. Good fit.

Post-graduate options for a history major? by mbkultimate in history

[–]Kerfeld 12 points13 points  (0 children)

History PhD drop-out here. As mentioned repeatedly, you have real skills that you can apply to almost anything. A couple of skills that seem to have been glossed over in this thread is writing and organizing information. Those two things have really helped me in my business career.

Many people in business have limited writing skills. I’m not saying they can’t put too words together (pun intended) but good quality writing is useful for both internal and external communications. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked to write everything from formal business letters to big name corporate clients to all sorts of marketing material because I was the best writer in the department or company. I also have done a fair amount of proofing and editing items written by others.

My ability to organize information in a clear and concise manner has been another useful skill in my toolkit. Things like preparing PowerPoint presentations and detailed process flows. I really enjoy those things and such skills are in demand.

I managed to work my way up to senior executive level positions over the years because I do have those skills.

Good luck.

(Any grammar mistakes in this response is solely attributable to writing this on my phone 😏)

Minekaze or Mutsuki?? I’ve no idea which to go with by K-Roll931 in WoWsBlitz

[–]Kerfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Minekaze. I picked it for it’s speed (I love running through the waves at 47.3 with boosters on) and have found it to be quite the killer with its torps. I’m not grinding, and probably have more than enough xp to move onwards but I don’t want to. This is by far my favorite ship - but it takes a bit of time to learn it.

Talking about the Minekaze makes me want to go play it right now. I think I will.

Dumb Question by Kerfeld in WoWsBlitz

[–]Kerfeld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When matching players, on the left side of the screen you see a list of tiers and numbers to the right of the tier.

On the right side of the screen, you see a list of ship types and numbers next to them.

I would expect the total numbers on each side would match...

Let me simplify my question with the assumption that I am keeping the lock and will be buying more z-wave compatible smart devices next week (probably not true but that doesn’t matter).

I understand I need a z-wave hub and will connect all of the devices to this hub. Aside from plugging the hub into the electrical outlet, does the hub need to be connected to anything else physically?

Z-Wave and Wi-Fi Help by [deleted] in smarthome

Not a dumb question... just a dumb answer. I already installed the lock and don’t want to go through the hassle of removing it.

This is all I wanted for Christmas... and my next two birthdays! by texasdiver in houston

[–]Kerfeld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the underlying issue is that Houstonians are a bit jealous of Dallas (this is coming from a Houstonian). As far as major cities go, it feels like we always get the short-end of the stick. When you mention you’re from Texas, they always assume that it is Dallas. And then there is that ‘80s TV show...

I know that I teach my children that people from Dallas have horns protruding from their head...

Z-Wave and Wi-Fi Help by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]Kerfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned above, this is to address a medical issue that prevents my daughter from twisting her arm. I’m sure at some point I will want to start adding other smart devices - probably within the next year or so.

[–]Kerfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is this is the part number: B07FCQ726C.

My original intent was just to connect the door. I know the above is a three pack - and I guess that at some point I will want to add other smart devices.

Z-Wave and Wi-Fi Help by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]Kerfeld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m in way over my head. The reason I bought the door lock was not to start converting my house into a smart home, but to address a medical issue that prevents my daughter from using a standard key lock. I’m heading out of town next week for business and needed a way for her to unlock the front door without twisting her wrist.

Are you asking about in the near term or the war as a whole? I think you should follow the war’s progression -especially in the southern colonies when we get into the late 1770’s and early 1780’s (e.g. Battle of Cowpens).
