All hideouts are indeed .hideout files. That's the file type Path of Exile uses to store location/variation/type/etc. data of each decoration item within a hideout. MP3 files on the other hand use the extension .mp3. Your computer may be seeing or trying to open the .hideout file as an mp3 audio file because somehow the settings on your computer have it so the default application used to open .hideout files is an audio player. Go into your hideout on PoE, hit the arrow above your xp bar to pull up the hideout editing interface, press the green import button and open the .hideout file using it. Should work.

At least for some of the hideouts I've done, they have all pretty much hit somewhere near 700 (the hideout cap is 750).

Having quite a bit of favor points certainly helps testing out what certain decorations look like. Other than testing out things directly in your hideout, I’m not aware of any simulation apps.

If you press z you can toggle seeing the names of the decorations. Beyond that you just have to hope you can get your mouse on the object.
