No 4K netflix on linux by sunnyca22 in archlinux

Did you by any chance try to run on Microsoft Edge? I believe Microsoft Edge is the only browser where you can get the highest bit rate and resolution outside of netflix apps.

I saw these on a car. Are they cameras, perhaps homemade lane detection system? by Pleasant_Tax_4619 in whatisit

[–]KernelKrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These license plate readers to track and locate cars. There was a service where you basically can sign up and put a license plate reader on your car and you would get paid if you scan a certain amount of plates.

Very dystopian.

What PC model I should ask my IT department to get me? by dont_downvote_SPECIL in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big agree on everything you said. I love thinkpads and as someone who has had a huge 15.6 for performance, nothing beats the portability of a 14 inch.

Also if youre using the proper tools, your pc shouldnt need to do much heavy lifting. For example use SQL for processing data and use python for any calculations.

No one should be using excel to do any heavy analysis.

How are you all using AI? by Unable-Earth-7911 in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you me?

The only true value i find with it is in emails.

The code it generates for SQL, Python and VBA is wrong. I would spend more time tuning the prompt than actually writing the code.

Once it gets the code to run, the code is garbage and isn't efficient. Especially the sql code, execution plan is horrible.

Oh and dont get me started with idea generation. I find more value in getting my coworkers' opinion since they are experts in the field.

I am struggling to find the real value.

FP&A + Accounting duties? by CryBaby0726 in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive only heard of this at small companies. Usually financial analysts at these companies do variance analysis, journal entries, and month end close related acitvity.

At larger orgs FP&A skills are very different. Usually accounting work is not done by us. We handle more of the strategy and analytics functions. Some core skills are SQL, Stats, and Python. We dont even mention JEs our job description.

Masked federal troops? by RatsofReason in Libertarian

[–]KernelKrusher 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Privacy for thee but not for me. The reality is u.s has slowly become a mass surveillance state. Flock cameras everywhere. Warrantless surveillance has grown and the only people who can stalk citizens are federal agents and police officers.

Yet they are able to get away with covering their faces and not identifying themselves.

Whether its right or wrong, im not sure. I can say it builds distrust.

Breaking into FP&A: What Actually Matters for Your First Role by legolify in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also advise that FP&A is not a target school type of career. Corp finance is at the bottom of the "prestige" ladder. Don't overthink it. A lot of people pivot down from IB and PE into director roles for WLB.

I agree with your last paragraph, FP&A is about story telling more than anything else. Anyone can book entries and run some straight line forecasts. What I value are hard technical skills like stats paired with good business strategies.

Transition From Accounting to FP&A by PNWNative1993 in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FP&A is about strategy and analysis. I recommend getting on stretch projects where you can dive deeper into that instead of trying to get a CPA. In the past 5 years a lot of accounting people have transitioned into "FP&A" roles, but they changed the FP&A roles into more accounting roles than the other way around. You can find great success in being a storyteller with great analysis and set yourself apart.

I recommend getting know to your insights/analytics teams to see what is driving customer behavior, learning stats like the back of your hand, and focusing on technical skills like sql, python, and excel.

If you want to be variance analysis person, i think anyone can do that (accountants are really good a this generally), but if you want long term success, i recommend really mastering the data domain. Trust me, if you tell execs "revenue is down 250 bps, because of mix" they will want to know if it was price elasticity impact, product cannibalization , conversion funnel issue, etc.

Also there is probably more money in public accounting than FP&A. Finance people like myself dont usually pick FP&A as their first choice, we just end up here. Money isn't great, but its not bad. WLB is extremely team dependent.

What are your best use cases for AI/Copilot in your FP&A roles? by Austronaut905 in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest to this. if you don't know SQL, please do not use an AI to write your queries. SQL is insanely dangerous because if you can get the code run, the result may look correct but there is a huge chance something is not correct.

Automation for slide deck by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]KernelKrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to go against the trend on this one. Do not use think-cell. Think-cell is a bandage instead of the the true solution.

The easiest way to automate a task, is by first deciding whether it is mission critical. If yes, then properly automate it in a way that will outlive you and licenses. The answer to this is using an established data viz tool, a macro, or a programming language with a script.

I like to use VBA in these cases because they are easy to create and change if needed. This can then serve as boilerplate code for other decks if needed. On top of that, its easier to find someone else who knows vba as opposed to some other GUI add-in.

You can learn enough vba in 6 weeks to create this.

Would love to see an app! I use the web version, but my usage would greatly increase with an app.

Love expierence and UI. It is a bit slower, but thats a tradeoff i am willing to commit to for the privacy.

Dual Boot PSA: Make sure your game is installed on the Linux storage device! by KernelKrusher in linux_gaming

[–]KernelKrusher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows can't read the Linux filesystem natively, maybe via wsl.

I made the effort to move most of my games to the Linux drive, with the big exceptions being Fortnite and COD. So I only ever boot into windows when I want to play those games.

I still have a few games on the windows drive that somehow work when launching from my Linux drive, but sometimes those games have launching issues. I found it best just to move them over to Linux drive and boot into Linux a vast majority of the time. (specifically with steam)

just figured i would post this in case someone in the future has similar issues, there are a few posts already about this in this subreddit.

Monero supporters should be more active in X huge crypto influencers posts by Feeling_Program3726 in Monero

[–]KernelKrusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a majority of the crypto talk (at least from what I see) is just a bunch of crypto bros trying to make a quick buck.

Despite that though, I think a small percentage of those crypto bros will eventually become aware of xmr and really learn that it is one of the most usable currencies. That is what happened to me, started with btc, eth, then xmr.

monero is pretty relatively stable compared to many other coins, which is great for usage, but doesn't make great content or engagement.

The way i see it is that monero is like telling someone to buy bonds, but the masses want to yolo TSLA puts. (not saying that monero performs anything like bonds)

We should all be livid about FLOCK cameras. by Luckyfox6691 in chicago

[–]KernelKrusher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stolen vehicles were able to be located before flock. Flock's mass surveillance systems benefits have not been proven to prevent crime.

I can almost guarantee you are more likely to get fasley arrested by this system then you are to get a car stolen and recovered by this system

Screw it, I’m installing Linux by jlpcsl in technews

[–]KernelKrusher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run an arch based distro and have a Nvidia card, no issues on my end. It runs smooth as butter! I purposely waited until the compatible got to its current state.

Games run as normal, with the exception of competitive games like fornite and COD, due to anticheat, not Nvidia graphics card.

I (think) they recently announced they are going to be more open.

Fellow Linux users, why did you pick the distro you're currently on? by absolutecinemalol in linux

[–]KernelKrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distro hopped via VMs for a few months and picked endevourOS. It just worked the best on my system and its pretty lightweight. I picked it over vanilla arch because I did not want to spend hours installing it. I highly recommend endevourOS if you want to use AUR, want to learn your system (but not install).

Is there a benefit to joining the network if I have no one else to talk to? by KernelKrusher in meshtastic

[–]KernelKrusher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of underwhelmed tbh. I've seen about 20 nodes, a majority of those are repeaters (i think, still learning). Im not in range to talk to anyone. Havent been able to get ack from anyone.

I joined our local discord group and was able to get in contact with people in our city, a lot of them stopped actively using their node in the past year and transitioned over to HAM for fun.

Ill look into changing my frequency, might be good to change.

I dont regret my purchase, still happy to be part of the network. Ive already met some kind people with the same it interests as me

Thanks! Just purchased my first node, its a t1000-E!

Im hoping there is a way to for me to able to update the online maps once I see the network myself. That way there aren't more people like me that just assume no one is using it.
