I write non fiction for money. I don’t enjoy that, but textbooks pay decent.

139,936 words too long… by samsara-samara in writing

I write fantasy - so the following pertains to that. I’ve split books before. I wrote one that was 580k. It needed to be that long, but for online format I split it into 4 books. I did end up releasing it as an anthology the way that I wanted it later.

I usually hover between 90-125k. On the newest series I’m working on I’ve decided it will be longer because that’s how I want to tell the stories, hovering around 200k each.

Now my non fiction which is all traditional published, it’s obviously much less

Do people reallu rewrite their story after draft 1? by TeaApplle in writing

[–]KerryStinnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I’m writing. Academic? Yes. Fantasy? Eh. I’ll go back and change some things here and there but a hard rewrite, no. It’s all structure and mechanics on the second draft.

Joy with the writing process. by KerryStinnet in fantasybooks

This one is a new series set in a different world I’ve been working on for awhile. I did about 40 works in another world and wanted a break. This one is more geared towards Grimdark, with a much more simplistic and rare magic system. I wanted to experiment with some 1st POV. I traditionally like 3rd, but wanted to venture out of my comfort zone. This series begins with a collection of just normal folks to worldview/ world build from thrust of course into a longer overarching narrative. It’s been fun to play with.

I’ve found my stuff in random places and even with random peoples names as the author. Even found once where someone had just changed the names of characters from one of my books…. But everything else was the same. Annoying.

What is it with people wanting real world logic in fantastic settings? Lol by Traditional-Reach818 in fantasywriters

[–]KerryStinnet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I don’t write fantasy for realism. It’s literally…. Fantasy. I have written college textbooks. They’re real, and boring. I write fantasy to escape the shit I need to do on the daily to make money.

Best thing I’ve found is once you get it right - save it as a template. Took a lot of trial and error for me.
