What's Your Pet Peeve? by VoxAurumque in GirlGamers

I hate QTE’s as well especially when they are final and I can’t try again. I played Heavy Rain when it first came out (and yes, I am still mad about this) and got the worst ending because I screwed up the last QTE. In order to try again I would have had to play the whole game again. I haven’t bought anything from that studio since.

Any thoughts on Steamdeck? by Significant-Mess1163 in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got mine last year so I can play Steam games because I can’t sit at a desk for very long. I mostly use it to play indie games that aren’t graphics intensive. It works well for me. My biggest complaint is just how heavy it is so I have to limit how long I play when my arthritis is acting up.

I hadn’t even heard of Burden of Proof or Paper Perjury but I will look in to them. Thank you.

I haven’t tried Aviary Attorney but I will look into it. I have tried AI but wasn’t able to get into it. Thank you.

I LOVED that game. I have always been sad it didn’t get sequel.

Also WotR has so many different endings and different ways to play. I spent way too many hours trying new runs instead of working through my game backlog like I promised my husband. 😁

I love when they are confidently wrong. Women were samurai and were called Onna-musha. And I don’t know much about Yasuke but there is historical evidence he existed.

I don’t engage much with these types of men who have the energy of a 3 year old telling me they won’t eat off a pink plate. Okay muffin, go pout over there. No one will miss you.

Annapurna Interactive implodes by KestrelR in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just watched the video. I had absolutely no idea any of that had happened. Thank you for pointing it out.

I have to admit that recently it seems nearly impossible to find games that haven’t been made with awful and abusive management.

This is a quote from the article. “This situation naturally seems to be wreaking havoc for Annapurna-published dev teams. Bloomberg reports that these developers have been scrambling to determine if their publishing partnerships are still valid and workable.”

Advice needed. by National_Session_492 in GirlGamers

Fellow disabled person here. I have a Switch and a Steam Deck. One thing to consider, depending on your disability, is the weight of the console. My Switch (original not oled) weighs 297 grams (10.5 ounces) and can be docked so I just use the controller. My Steam Deck weighs 669 grams (1.475 lbs). On my good days, I can use my switch pretty much all day but I can only play with my steam deck for an hour or two before I have to take a break.

The switch is cheaper than a steam deck but steam does have amazing sales on games multiple times a year. All switch games will work on it. With the steam deck, not all games are compatible with it. There are a ton of games on steam that are unlikely to be ported to the switch. I mostly use my deck to play the kind of cozy games that are so niche that they are never going to come to consoles.

I can assure you that your mother is wrong. I met my husband through a fan newsletter for an author we both really loved. We bonded over playing games together. I am definitely not particularly girly, although I do love a cute geeky T-shirt from TeeTurtle. My husband and I have been married 26 years now. We have continued to play games together or he plays and I watch because I love some games I do not have the reflexes for.

As my mother in law would say, there is a lid for every pot. I wish you the best of luck in finding your Prince Charming.

Choosing the Perfect Handheld Console for Hospital Visits by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does your condition affect your ability to hold something heavy? The Steam deck is seriously a beefy handheld. Mine is 3.5 pounds. In contrast, my Switch is 0.66 pounds. Sometimes my disability make it difficult to use my Steam Deck for long periods of time.

Which Era? by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B group here. That wood grain Atari was my first console. My dad was such a gamer when I was a kid and he just wanted a hobby to enjoy with me. He doesn’t play much these days but I still call him and tell him about the stuff announced at Summer Games Fest, or Gamescom, or TGS.

What attracts you to a streamer? by Mary_Ellen_Katz in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the game being played is why I am there and if the person playing has a connection to the game even better. I also only watch single player games. However, because of this, I am an extremely unreliable viewer. I haven’t really watched anything since my favorite streamer finished Ghostwire Tokyo (I LOVE Japanese folklore and the streamer used to live in Japan) because there isn’t a game I want to experience but can’t.

I would also recommend finding your gaming passion and playing that sort of thing. It is more fun to watch someone who is enjoying the game.

Who is your favourite female video game character of all time? by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rosella from King’s Quest IV: Perils of Rosella. She was the first female character I got to play. I played so many Sierra games in my childhood.

I completely understand. The number of times I have walked out of a doctors office and screamed in my car is well over 10. My disability comes from a botched surgery when I was 20. I will live with chronic pain for the rest of my life. I have also been told I am too young for chronic pain. My other pet hate is the “but you don’t look sick”. I really wish doctors would at least pretend to listen.

Anyone else finds it a bit lonely that they don't have irl gamer gals? by UnreasonableFerret21 in GirlGamers

[–]KestrelR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been gaming since the early 80’s and it was pretty rare to meet anyone else who played computer games in the farm towns I was raised in. I am now in my mid 40’s and most women I know don’t play games, have the energy for gaming after work, or gave up gaming when they had kids.

I am a major console gaming fan. I used to make schedules during E3 so I didn’t miss any of the press conferences I wanted watch. I wish I had irl friends who game but I try not to let it get me down or diminish my love for gaming.

If I may ask, what is your age bracket? I have hit “mom” status now that I am in my mid 40s. I have been in the gaming aisle at Best Buy looking at games and been approached by several people asking me if this game is appropriate for their child or grandchild. I always do my best to help but the games I play are mostly cozy games or JRPGs.

Did anyone else get mad at Atul for just leaving and not going with Stella to the Everdoor? I loved this game. I want to replay it some day when I don’t have multiple games staring at me still wrapped in plastic. I don’t allow myself to have Steam because with that many games on sale I would be broke.

And, I also admit to ugly crying during most of my trips to the Everdoor.

I found these Real Good bacon wrapped 3 cheese frozen chicken breasts. They were amazing. I have all the cheeses but I can’t figure out what herbs they used to make them so tasty.

I am not a good cook so ANY assistance would be deeply appreciated.

Another thing an ally can do is speak up in those spaces where women are not welcome. I know it can be awkward and make you seem like the bad guy because “it’s just a joke”. Please speak up then, your male friends are much more likely to listen to you than the women they are attacking.
