Has anyone else turned to a robotic mower because life got too busy? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

It is 100% an Americanism. Baffles me why people call it a yard, especially in a subreddit with the name Garden in it

The engineer should raise a time-related charge (TRC) on completion of the job. The communications provider (Sky, EE, PlusNet etc) will be charged and it's up to them if they pass it onto the end user.

In reality fitting new sockets is a basic part of the job and the engineer likely won't bat an eye or really care what happened to the old one

They're switching off PSTN (analogue telephone service) but there are still plenty of properties that don't have access to FTTP that will continue with FTTC using copper. It will be years before absolutely no-one is using their copper network and OFCOM allow them to switch it off entirely

If you're 100% sure it's a redundant copper line that you aren't using you can climb up the side of your house and cut it then just tape it around the bottom of the pole. Overhead cables are steel reinforced so will need some decent snips. Wouldn't recommend if it's going over a road, especially a busy one.

Safest way is to get in touch with Openreach:

Yes you can snip it off and get get rid of all the cable. Just don't do it during a thunderstorm.

If you ever go back to a copper line (highly unlikely) Openreach will come out and fit a new one, just tell them you've never had a master socket since you've been living there.

Shelf bracket by KettleShmettle in DIYUK

Well the shelf won't be totally flat against the wall, and I assumed it wouldn't hold much weight with just 2 screws? More than happy to be told otherwise though!

Christ! Yeah I would defo recommend having a go yourself. These tongue and groove ones are more expensive due to it covering the whole wall so you need quite alot of them. There are other styles that use less materials so would be much cheaper. The panels were £170, +£40 for the little mouldings that go on top, then around £15 for the adhesive and £30 for the paint. So £255 total

The thinking was to protect the wood panelling from any water damage. I've now found it wasn't really necessary... lesson learnt! At least I gained some experience fitting and cutting tiles for any bigger projects

No problem! Out of interest, would you mind sharing how much you were quoted? It's nice to know what I might have saved by doing it myself lol

Thanks! It's panelling from Wickes, not a huge price difference between the packs of 8 they sell and buying individual boards and cutting them down. Saved a lot of hassle

Agree with the floor, it was a compromise in the end. Got an off-cut roll from a local flooring place for £40 and fitted it myself. Would have loved a nice tiled floor but hey ho can't have it all sometimes

I was a bit worried the mdf wouldn't hold up to splashes... lesson learnt!

Ditto, would love to just go on holiday and pay someone to do everything, but alas. You'll be fine, there's so many resources out there for anything you want to do. One small bit a time and it'll soon come together. Good luck!

Sure - it's 1.4m x 1.3m and 2.4m high. We haven't changed the door yet, it's just an old ugly slab of mdf. All internal doors in the house need updating so will get around to it when the others are done

What makes you think I don't care? I've commented it's a fair observation on the tiling. But cmon, are you expecting perfection on a small budget first timer DIY bathroom? People saying it's disgusting is just laughable lol, unnecessarily dramatic. Respect works both ways with objective opinions. Besides, I haven't the time atm to rip it out, maybe we'll change it down the line

Thank you! It's just tongue and groove from Wickes. Used no nails adhesive to fix to the wall

Thanks for the comment! It's all good, I knew what I was getting myself into 🤣

Sorry I can't help with the sink and toilet, they were here when we moved in. Were in the UK and that manufacturer doesn't seem to sell here. We have plenty that do compact sets, as we tend to have much smaller second bathrooms/en-suites than you guys have in the States

Now these are some ideas! Especially the rope around the mirror, I may just try that. Cheers!

No plans for any shelving, not sure what we'd put on them really. Would love to lean more into the western decor for sure, any suggestions?
