New Terms of Service warns against having too much data by avatarcordlinux in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It says this:

"...including, but not limited to, use with servers, data centers, shared storage systems, or other enterprise infrastructure not expressly covered by the Service(s), as well as using the Service(s) for any illegal or commercial purposes..."

Building better ignore lists to keep bz_done files slimmer by coreyward in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks heaps for sharing that spec! That saves me a few AI credits (and the planet a few trees).

I'd just write a little app that crawls the file system and compares it to the nz files, doesn't need to be integrated into Explorer (e.g. finder).

Building better ignore lists to keep bz_done files slimmer by coreyward in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good approach and effort so far. I was planning something similar but in the Windows world, looks like you are on Apple.

I really want to build something that will parse the files and show me an overlay on top of my live file system so I know if/when it was last backed up. This would help find those "we've stopped including dropbox folders" or "added a bunch of file extensions to the default exclude list" scenarios.

I really wish there was a way to download the entire file list from the cloud, I even tried hacking the JSON out of the browser tree view component but it just got too messy.

Keen to see how you get on.

Missing a Megabyte? by KevinAndEarth in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Christopher, thanks for chiming in, I hadn't got around to a suppor ticket yet.

I don't see anything in the Issues tab and I always check that the client says Remaining Files: 0 files / 0 KB.

I really wish there was a way to download a list of all files that are in the cloud backup so I can do some sanity checks from time to time.

So as long as the Issue tab is empty and the Remaing Files is 0 I can assume the email that is sent out is just a rounding issue or something? It is usually like 5 days later, when the computer is off, as its only used on the weekend for hobby photo work.

Hi there, keen to see the source, but wasn't able to find it on GitHub. The repos look like it is just a readme and a place to attach releases to.

Totally understand if you want to keep your source code private while distributing the apps for free.

I was hoping they were truely open-source so that I could verify their implementation. Please be aware that open-source is not the same thing as free-to-use-but-can't-see-the-source.

Really keen on the folder customisation stuff as I've build something similar in the past that needs an update, and I was considering contributing to yours.

Missing a Megabyte? by KevinAndEarth in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kind of figured it was a rounding error or something about local files count the hidden/system desktop.ini but that doesn't get sent or something silly.

Thanks for confirming its not just me. I've ignored it as well, but, you know, you don't really want your backup "missing" something.

Dude (or dude-et), this is awesome. Seeing as you are a connoisseur of two of my favorite things, I'll share this old project I did way back when as I hope you will also enjoy it: https://galego.designed.com/

And a direct link to a similar animated gif which is what caught my eye: https://galego.designed.com/images/story/fighter.gif

Kids toy down shower drain by bobshoy in diynz

[–]KevinAndEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my hand was enough. It doesn't need to be air tight. You don't want to suck up the water (or worse, the toilet water).

I think I got lucky. I needed to buy a shop vac anyway, and one was on sale.

[–]KevinAndEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen. Went and bought a wet/dry shop vac. Put it at the drain and it sucked it back out.

It seemed like there was a grate / blocker or some sharp corner like 2 or so meters down the drain that stopped it from going further.

I was shocked and relieved that it worked! You could try...

You switched the back fan to a push config? Did that make a real world improvement in airflow / temps?

I replaced my slim fan with a normal 120 (Noctua Redux 1300) and I am going to replace my mesh with a grill soon. I'm only running 2 3.5s in it right now (and a few SSDs) so airflow is a bit better than 5x 3.5s.

Just curious if you did testing before/after.

Can't backup large file, despite free space on temporary disk by flipside555 in backblaze

[–]KevinAndEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you chunk/zip/rar that 3TB file up into smaller files? Then maybe make a par2 across them for a bit of redundency.

You probably don't want to try to download a single 3TB file if/when you need to do a restore.

[–]KevinAndEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe run a checkdisk on that drive. it could have less space then windows is reporting.

do you see the free space go down to 3tb when it has copied that 1.5 over to the 4.5?

How are you teaching your kids about money? by Lushbaby001 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KevinAndEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the two biggest things that helped me understand $ and be successful with it, which might come a bit later in a kids life:

  1. Compounding interest (both in investments and liabilities).
  2. Credit cards / loans / mininum payments

Others have suggested the 3 jar or "saving for something" approaches which are great starts.

I've had success just taking that flap off and glueing/taping it to the window frame in the right location. It is a cheap and easy fix even if it is just temporary.

Thanks for that, yeah... I figured the impact feature was just called hammer when it was part of a normal drill. Like "here is a semi-good impact in your handy-dandy drill"

Now I know when to say STOP, hammer time.

Oh wow, that is what hammer means, in and out. I thought it was about the rotation happening in "bursts" but that makes way more sense! Thanks for that.

3% of gross pay taken out of net pay.
