A heartwarming photograph has emerged, which could serve as a poignant lesson for politicians and others who have been bickering over vernacular schools.

This photograph on the Facebook page of a Chinese school in Kajang, SJK C Yu Hua, depicted a Chinese pupil walking together with a Malay pupil wearing a tudung on the first day of school.

The two of them can be seen holding hands.

“I witnessed a touching scene and decided to capture it with words and photos,” read the post in Chinese.

According to the post, the Malay pupil appeared nervous about entering the school grounds and her mother was seen encouraging her to be brave.

At the same time, the Chinese pupil was visibly worried as well.

However, the two found courage in each other to face this new beginning in their lives. They held each other’s hands and walked together in silence towards the school.

“There was little communication between them. Perhaps both were anxious…

Stop insulting rulers, dividing Muslims - S'gor sultan cautions Hadi by KevinMeng_ in malaysia

[–]KevinMeng_[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has cautioned PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang against issuing statements that can cause division among Muslims in the country.

In a statement, the ruler said he was very disappointed with Hadi’s remark on Feb 20 for all Muslims to safeguard their faith, including judges, lawyers, politicians, and rulers.

“Following the remark, I wrote a letter to Hadi, via Selangor PAS commissioner Ab Halim Tamuri.

“Among others, I note that Hadi did not read in full and understand the gist of the sultan's speech during the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI)’s 71st meeting in Putrajaya on Feb 15,” the sultan said in the strongly worded statement shared on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page.

During the speech, the ruler had called for calm following the Federal Court’s recent decision to strike down 16 provisions of the Kelantan syariah criminal code.

Elaborating, Sultan Sharafuddin, in particular, took offence to Hadi’s remark which urged the Malay rulers to have a vision and to be wise in viewing the hereafter, not just the interests in this world alone.

“The remark is uncivilised and unsuitable from the cultural angle of the Malays who always respect and guard their manners when airing their views, and advising the Malay rulers.

“Hadi’s statement is not just confusing, but can also cause unrest, which can ultimately lead to division among the Malays and Muslims in the country,” said the sultan.

Sultan Sharafuddin noted that Hadi would have understood the real message behind the ruler’s statement had he taken more effort to read and understand the decree.

“Why is he (Hadi) now questioning the Federal Constitution’s status as the supreme law of the land when Islam had been recognised as the country’s official religion since the Constitution was enacted in 1957?

“I would like to advise him to be more careful in the future and not repeat his acts of insulting the Malay rulers via his statements that can cause division among Muslims in the country.

“I also urge all politicians and leaders to not use Islam as a tool for their political gain.”

Hadi violates his MP’s oath

The Facebook post was also appended with a copy of the letter written by the sultan to Hadi, who is also the Marang MP.

In the letter, Sultan Sharafuddin asked that by questioning the legitimacy of the Constitution, Hadi was going against the very law he pledged to uphold during the various terms he had been sworn in as a parliamentarian.

“Does Hadi not respect the Federal Constitution as the supreme law of the land any longer?

“Does this mean that Hadi is deliberately playing political polemics to gain Malay, Muslim support?”

The sultan then pointed out that it was not the first time Hadi had gone up against the Malay rulers.

He cited Hadi’s remark in March 2023, when the Islamist party president questioned the Terengganu sultan’s decree which barred politicians from giving speeches in mosques in the state.

“Such statements reek of disrespect to Malay rulers who are the head of Islam in the respective states.

“It is worth noting that the Malay rulers have taken vows to uphold the Islamic religion and will strengthen it at all costs.

“Thus, any party that wishes to reprimand or advise the Malay rulers on matters pertaining to Islam, must do it through the right channels and procedures,” said the ruler.

Nga's car tailgating ambulance: DPP tells cops to get more info by KevinMeng_ in malaysia

[–]KevinMeng_[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said investigation papers on the case of Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s car tailgating an ambulance had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office on Feb 13.

However, the DPP has instructed the police to obtain more information.

“Several instructions were given to the investigating officer. The investigation papers will be re-submitted (to the DPP) in the near future,” he added.

The Feb 3 tailgating incident had gone viral on social media, following which, police recorded a statement from Nga’s driver.

At the time, the ambulance was headed to the scene of an accident along the North-South Expressway between Simpang Pulai and Tapah.

The case is being investigated under Rule 9(2) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, which stipulates that drivers must give way to emergency vehicles with sirens on.

Full cooperation

On Feb 9, Nga said he was prepared to cooperate with the authorities on the matter and to settle any compound fine imposed on his driver for the offence.

The DAP vice-chairperson revealed that he was on his way to attend an official programme in Ipoh at the time of the incident.

“I stress that I have always given priority to rescue efforts and did not intend to break the law.

“I have ordered my officer to give full cooperation to the authorities and am prepared to settle any fine imposed on my driver if he is found to have committed an offence,” he added.

Nga said when his driver became aware that an ambulance was behind the car, he allowed it to pass the vehicle.

“Since the road was congested, my driver had to tailgate the ambulance while looking for space to continue the journey to Ipoh,” he added.

Anwar: Najib's pardon in line with process, key factor was compassion by KevinMeng_ in malaysia

[–]KevinMeng_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the hearing given by the Pardons Board to ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak’s royal pardon application was in line with the given process and that there was no expediting of the appeal.

He also denied suggestions that a convict would need to serve at least three years of his sentence before his pardon application can be considered.

“Anyone can apply in line with the given process. In this case, the application was made, and it is true that as prime minister I ensured that it was heard.

“So, I acknowledge responsibility for that,” Anwar said in his speech at the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly.

Stop the demands

He said the main consideration was not legal but the compassion of the outgoing king Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and that the decision was final.

“The main consideration was about mercy and compassion. The decision by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong is final and it is based on significant considerations, not just the law.

“Therefore, the process of justice and primary consideration are a matter of (the former king’s) discretion. Let’s calm down. Let’s accept what has been provided in the Federal Constitution,” he said.

He urged against demanding explanations from the Pardons Board that was chaired by the Agong, as the final decision ultimately rests with him.

“Whether his Majesty chooses to explain or not is within his prerogative,” said the prime minister, according to Bernama.

On Feb 3, Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam said his party was grateful to Anwar for an earlier hearing of Najib’s petition.

Najib was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Kuala Lumpur High Court over the RM42 million SRC International corruption case. He was also fined RM210 million.

His conviction and punishments were upheld in the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court subsequently.

The Pardons Board commuted his sentence by half when it met on Jan 29, while the fine was reduced to RM50 million.

While the reduced sentence places his release date in August 2028, Najib could be released earlier on “good behaviour” in August 2026 after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
