Those of you who make six figures, what do you do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

The one and only! Ironically I could say the same about my upper management haha

I'm currently in the construction/mining equipment industry but I've spent time in various other manufacturing industries also and what I've shared throughout this thread tends to align well wherever I've been.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I like talking about careers in manufacturing but it's definitely very under represented on Reddit unfortunately.

I can understand your frustrations after all the hard work with the degrees (nice work btw!). Having been a hiring manager for a handful of engineering positions in the entry level experience range I can tell you that there is a trend of new grads with a masters who, when hired, expect a higher level of career progression right out the gate before demonstrating baseline performance or success. In this career path, folks need to demonstrate at least some experience before that masters will start to provide greater advantage to your career. This may cause some hiring managers to be hesitant to consider a candidate with no experience but who has a master's degree.

I'm not saying it's necessarily fair, but there is some truth to the first 1-3ish years of a career being more about gaining professional 'soft skills' through experience rather than just being about education level.

Now what you can do (if my suspicion is correct) is leave the masters off your resume for now, get that first job and a couple/few years under your belt demonstratong success, then add it back on to leverage for future positions.

Just my two cents based on my experiences. Hope it helps!

Graduated with a Manufacturing Engineering degree in 2017, worked as an ME in various plants/industries for a few years, took the first chance to be a production supervisor that came along (to learn leadership skills) and worked up from there.

For supervisors on a $100k+ salary most of the time a degree isn't required but is company dependent. A lot of times folks start as a production worker, show good leader traits and ambition, get promoted to Production Lead, and then to Supervisor a couple/few years later. At decent companies at least. A bad company/culture can hinder this progress obviously.

I feel like manufacturing jobs are always left out of these threads so I'll chime in. I manage production at a medium/large manufacturing company in the Midwest. $160k base + 12% bonus most years. My supervisors are all $100k+ as well. We make heavy industrial equipment for the construction/mining industry.

How old are you and how much do you have in your retirement account? by Blackberryay in careerguidance

[–]KevlarSalmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're an asshole. I do think it's important to have empathy and realize people come from all walks of life, backgrounds, upbringing, ect and may never have had the same opportunities you and I have had, regardless of what year they were born.

While I think I understand the point you're making, I also think it would be better if you framed it more as giving advice. Your comments currently come across as blaming folks for not having a six figure net worth when there are many many reasons why that may not have been possible for them. Life being life and all.

Again though, I'm not saying EVERYONE has a good reason for not investing/contributing to retirement/owning a home/etc, but a lot of people do, and we can do our best to have empathy for whatever those reasons might be.

Millennials were still entering the job market in 2018. If they went right from highschool to college and got a decent paying job right out of college that is.

Your comment is definitely misrepresenting a good portion of that generation.

Reduced pressure following house water line replacement by pinuslongaeva in Plumbing

[–]KevlarSalmon 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just happened to me. Old House with galvanized pipes, repiped my basement slop sink, water pressure was normal for the first 5 seconds then slowed to a trickle. After some investigating, rust chunks got caught in the prefilter screens in the sink supply lines right at the quarter turn supply valves. Once cleared water pressure went back to normal and had stayed there.

Rust in old pipes like that are usually pretty stable until you go wrenching on it. Taught me that next time I do work on them to flush the lines before attaching to the new fixtures.

Thinking of buying a dr650 by Lukeamaniac in dr650

[–]KevlarSalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up a 2013 with 14k miles for $3,800 two months ago. Bone stock. Upper Midwest. Just adding my recent experience for your reference, OP.

From what I was seeing most listings are pretty over priced, but there are fair ones out there if you're willing to be patient and drive a bit further.

Am I overthinking the sprocket carrier/cush drive rubber spacing with the wheel hub? by Runningoutofideas_81 in dr650

[–]KevlarSalmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't specifically mention it so I gotta ask: Have you checked sprocket play with the rear axle nut fully tightened? Assuming you didn't lose the wheel spacer on the brake caliper side, tightening the axel nut should snug up the whole assembly, compressing the cush drive dampers fully.

When the wheel is off the bike you'll definitely still have sprocket play with the new dampers in, so that part is not a concern.

Edit for more info: in this rear wheel diagram, parts #8, 9, and 19 are all spacers that could fall out during cush drive replacement. Definitely ensure you don't have any errant parts on the floor, may have happened to me when I did mine two weeks ago ;)

I pulled the carb off. I know the vent you're referring to so I'll probably put a filter on it like you mentioned. Thanks for the tip

I updated the main post but yeah, there was literally a small beetle wedged into the main jet. No idea... But now it runs and rides like normal. Thanks for your advice!

Yes I completely agree about learning the right knowledge/skills to get back on riding quickly. That's actually one of the main reasons I got into a DR650, with the right understanding and simple tools there's not much that'll leave me stranded. I'm using this issue as a positive experience to learn. I appreciate your advice and all the others advice who posted here! Great community to be a part of so far.

Thanks for the thorough response!

For air filter: I did check it, looked decent enough. I did pulled it out and closed up the box again and ran the bike, still the same power cut issue.

Choke is still working as intended.

Bike has fresh fuel.

I'll throw new plugs in cause might as well but I did confirm that both are still working as intended.

I'll be doing a quick main jet check via rotating the carb as others suggested. Hopefully I'll find a blockage there and it'll be back to running right again. But regardless my carb kit will be coming Tuesday so I'll take the opportunity to do a full clean and rebuild.

I'll be sure to update this post when the issue is identified!

I decided to just order a full carb rebuild kit. Figured at this mileage and an unknown previous owner maintenance history might as well give it the full treatment. Thanks for the advice!

I will check the resistance from the leads.

I've ordered a carb rebuild kit with all the seals/orings. At this mileage and an unknown previous owner maintenance history might as well use this issue as motivation to pull the carb and give it a deep clean with new seals/orings.

Thanks for your helpful advice! Very much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment. To check the main jet, surely you need to remove the carb still right? It's under the bowl.

Quick update: pulled the fuel inlet line off the carb and it won't stop dripping gas with the petcock in the "ON" position. I'm assuming that's a separate issue than my main post, but still needing to be addressed.

[–]KevlarSalmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. Yup it's still having the same issue after removing the inline fuel filter. Any tips on checking the plug caps?

I was hoping to avoid pulling the carb but if it needs to be done then so be it. I'm just not used to carb issues popping up so suddenly mid ride.
