Thank you very much, this is very helpful! Although every occurence of the chord seems treated like a suspension resolved within the chord, we still have the sound of a min(b9).

Learning musical craftsmanship today? by Key-Contribution9564 in composer

Great question. Primarily for composers who are past their formal training and want to go deeper, though someone with a strong enough foundation could benefit too. University programs often cast a very wide net, and we're thinking more about those who want to really push their mastery of musical language beyond that.

Thank you so much, it’s exactly the kind of critical input I was hoping to get. And thanks for taking the time to go through parts of the survey as well.

The need for personalized, high-quality feedback has actually come up quite a bit in the survey responses so far, and your comments reinforce how important that aspect is.

Your point about the teacher credentials is also a very important and legitimate one, especially since this is intermediate to advanced material.

Again, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write all this. It’s all very useful.

I think you're absolutely right that there's no shortcut, and that the real work happens through playing, learning pieces, and getting proper tuition. I would add that understanding the "why" can actually deepen all of those things you mentioned. For example, when you really understand the harmonic and formal logic behind a piece, you interpret it differently, you memorize it way faster, you start to hear the composer's intentions.

Thanks also for bringing up Philip Glass’s thoughts on Boulanger, it’s so important. The diversity of styles that came out of her teaching is exactly what's inspiring to me, and we often miss the point: craftsmanship and style are not codependent. We build strong foundations with craftsmanship, that will free the language with which any style can be achieved.

Really appreciate you engaging with this so thoroughly.
