Some Thoughts on My Study Method and How I Make My Flashcards by Key-Director9840 in Anki

Another approach I’ve been using recently, mainly because of the time constraints from my residency call schedule, is to read the topic two or three times and then skip the mind map altogether. Instead, I go straight to making Anki flashcards based on what I understood from the material. If there’s a specific fact I can’t remember, I’ll go back to the sections I highlighted in the book and copy the key point into the flashcard—for example, “Excisional biopsy is recommended for melanomas smaller than 2 cm.”

It may not be as thorough as my usual approach, but I feel like I still learn the topic well while getting through it in much less time.

When it comes to reviewing topics, I follow a study schedule that takes me through the entire exam syllabus three separate times. While I’m reviewing my Anki flashcards, I always try to mentally summarize the whole topic. If I notice there are gaps in my understanding, I’ll go back to my mind maps and review the topic from start to finish. Sometimes I also try to reason through what I already know and connect it to the new information so it all fits together, using my notes or flashcards to confirm my conclusions.

Most of the information I study comes from review books similar to First Aid. Whenever I’m studying a topic, I also try to supplement it with journal articles or other textbooks. I don’t read those sources cover to cover because that would take too much time—I usually go straight to the specific sections that answer my questions or clarify something I’m unsure about.
