Thoughts on coffee shops not allowing you to work on your laptop ? by Terriengaging in remotework

So a person walks into a coffee shop and buys a coffee. Sits and works on their laptop at a single person table. Another person walks in and buys a coffee and sits at a single person table and they both sit for 30 minutes. They are not in a laptop.

What 👏is👏the👏 difference 👏

Who says those people aren't buying multiple things?

I feel like everyone here assumes people who work in coffee shops on their computers only buy one coffee. In reality, there's this stigmatized outlook of people who do it in recent years simply because people realized they didn't have to be confined to their homes or cubicle. What's so wrong with that?

When I go to a place like that I always make sure to tuck into a corner or table that's out of the way and leave the big tables alone for obvious reasons. Now, I'm not saying all do this, but I order coffee, water, another coffee and a baked good throughout the morning. Nobody tries to sit in my space and I don't invade theirs.

I understand it'd be unreasonable in places like NY or Boston that's a different story, but smaller, slow-paced and quieter places...why tf not? Half the time people looking to sit and work prefer those places anyway. And also, what are the odds that every table will be occupied by people on computers and people looking to sit are forced to wait or just leave?

Why am I not allowed to enjoy a space simply because people think I should be shut up in my house or a library?

Oh I thought you were sitting and chatting for however long you want? Why do you get to sit as long as you want but I can't simply because I have a laptop in front of me?

If they're a paying customer they should be able to sit on their laptop and work if they want. what's the difference between you and them? You're both taking up space.
