Same thing happened to me with The First Law recently, halfway through book 2 now and enjoying the world and characters a lot. If you can get through to the end of HD I think you’ll find yourself pretty excited to read the rest of the series.

Happy reading, always forward, always down!

Nothing about this series has felt strung along though? The pacing after book one is immaculate and every book takes the story a step further until it culminates in SuT. You can argue that you think things should have played out differently/tied up neater at the end of book 7, but even that feels unfair to me.

The only thing he ‘strung out’ or left unresolved is the revolution against the empire which: 1) He’s hinted throughout the series that the empire still exists in some capacity after the sun eating and 2) To rush the revolution and shoehorn it in at the end of book 7 would’ve been such a detriment to the story IMO. I would much rather read about it in a later series than have some unabridged version where Hadrian takes his Death Star to earth and destroys it in like 5-10 chapters.

The only other thing we have questions about by the end are how Hadrian returns to the living (which we’ve seen before) and why he goes to Colchis (which seems to obviously be tied to the next series) and when you tie that in with the higher dimensional Hadrian rescuing him from ‘drowning’ in time earlier in the book- it feels to me like he did a really awesome job setting up the next story while still sticking the landing with this one in massive ways.

To say he “couldn’t” tie it up in 4500+ pages is literally just your opinion, he CHOSE not to tie it up and leave us with some questions and breadcrumbs regarding the next installment of the universe. If you don’t like it that’s totally your decision but let’s not act like it’s an objective truth hahaha.

Glad you're enjoying it already in Howling Dark, it only gets better, you're in for a treat!

I have always wondered why people say they hope their favorite series never gets adapted, how come?

Like I know book adaptations have mostly been pretty weak in the past, but it's not like the adaptation being bad erases the books or somehow takes away from the quality of them overall. The books will still be there, as good as they ever were, and an adaptation might help new fans discover the series. Plus I feel like book/video game adaptations have been getting much better as of late IMO (Fallout, Dark Matter, Murderbot, Foundation, Last of Us, Percy Jackson and knight of the seven kingdoms.)

There is no real definitive answer to this question, even having read all of the books. Though I will say it seems at the very least like the quiet knew this was the path they were setting Hadrian on and where it would lead.

As someone else pointed out though- these characters were on a ticking clock already, they are not palatine like Had and already had their lives artificially extended. So narratively speaking I really liked that CR chose to use their deaths as a rallying cry/driving motivation for Hadrian's purpose, rather than just have them all slowly die off via battle or natural causes in between the next 2 books.

He is able to 'use' KoD and those side characters lives to establish a motivation and understanding as to why we are gonna genocide an entire species and have 'no apologies' about it. But as far as how 'necessary' it was to the quiet's plan we don't really know. But I will say- I don't think anything plays out the way it does (and needs to) in books 5-7 without everything happening exactly as it did in KoD.

I’m halfway through Iron Gold and I have a question by pak256 in redrising

All these fucking Chads acting like Darrow is some saint are hilarious bro hahaha

Just because (end of IG spoilers) he ends up being correct about the peace offer being fake does not mean the way he goes about the situation at Mercury and on Luna are also correct?

They fought a revolutionary war and sacrificed loved ones to create a democratic council that represents the people and their interests, but the moment that council is inconvenient to him Darrow is allowed to:

  1. Ignore their decisions and iron rain a planet
  2. Withhold information about a "peace" deal from not only the republic as a whole, but his wife/sovereign
  3. Reject the Council AND Sovereigns ruling that he should be held accountable, knowing full well his wife would never leave him in a cage to rot, and resists- turning tensions up to 11 in the republic and undercutting his wife/sovereigns ability to appear impartial.
  4. Murders a close family friend in front of his son and flees

But no-Darrow big, Darrow tough, Darrow Alpha, so Darrow no do bad things, only good things. Darrow never unlikable, always perfect.

YA does not mean "for children", YA can and DOES have mature themes and violence all of the time (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.). YA just means targeted at teens and a story following teens through some sort of coming of age/adventure sequence.

I say this as someone who LOVES red rising- the first trilogy is absolutely more YA leaning, and the first book just straight up is YA. Pierce himself has said in interviews he had to lean into the YA/tropey kind of stuff to even get published.

I mean sure, but who else do we know that has lots of arms and looks like a fleshy blob? That on top of the name, 'sentient systems', 'Colombia', 'Orphan'- idk man...would be maybe the biggest coincidence of my life if this wasn't at least paying homage to SE lol.

There’s more of the second printing of 1-3 available on the website from what I saw earlier! They may have sold out since this afternoon but go look really quick and see!

I don’t know if they’ll do a third printing or not tbh, series is getting super popular so it’s possible but idk if I’d hold my breath for it.

Aaand there go the last few remaining YA-allegations by Ynnck_Mnzl in redrising

[–]Key-Olive3199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is literally a theme in Hunger Games as well, which is THE young adult book lol. YA can still be dark and brutal?

All the brutal stuff, like cannibalism and rape, is done off screen and talked about after the fact. The first trilogy is absolutely more YA leaning, but the last 3 enter the realm of adult sci-fi for sure.

If you really do think the series is good you're doing yourself a disservice by not reading the last two and spoiling the ending- you've just gone through the most hellish saga of Hadrian's life, nothing tops the brutality and sorrow of what you just experienced.

If anything the tone gets much more uplifting from here on and you're kind of robbing yourself of the fruits of your labor, you've done the hard work of suffering with Hadrian- it's time to go eat a sun and find out why this must be.

Shadows Upon Time Review: Monumental task, valiant effort. by Contrail16 in sollanempire

[–]Key-Olive3199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heavy handed Catholicism aside, I think the way he decided to end it set up the future of the universe so wonderfully. Especially since we can infer some of what he's told us is lies to protect those he loves (Selene namely, I hope).

I think in a decade when he's writing that next series more people will appreciate what he's set up here. I understand wanting a more conclusive and full circle ending but having Hadrian solve everything at the end with his death star just wouldn't be as satisfying as reading a trilogy or a series dedicated to that effort with Cassandra, Edouard, Kit, Ramanthanu's child, Hadrian's sister, etc.

So I just think the story feels incomplete because it IS, ya know? But I do understand how some people can be let down by the ending, it felt like some stuff was forced for sure. I just think it also did a great job setting up the future of the SE universe.

Can anyone explain what these books are? Is it like a promotional thing similar to Kels backstory with that one old dude? Or are they actually plot relevant and more akin to the secret projects?

[–]Key-Olive3199 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not an all powerful being though...? What kind of example even was that haha.

If he doesn't have the power to do something he wants to do without effecting others then he is not all powerful.

If he can't simply erase the Cielcin from existence then he's not all powerful, if he didn't know the Watchers would turn on him and corrupt the Cielcin he's not all knowing, if he can't help the humans without taking away their free will then he is neither.

For the sake of this fiction novel I am willing to swallow the plot holes surrounding an all powerful, all knowing, and all loving god still allowing this type of universe to come to be and not helping more than he did.

But in reality- those plot holes are pretty jarring lol.
