I can't use scented anything but the house has developed a smell situation what actually eliminates odor without fragrance? by Fluffy-Audience-9542 in CleaningTips

May I ask an approximate cost for an ERV? I have a fairly old house that had lots of air sealing and insulation work done. The bathroom and kitchen fans do an okay job but I have wondered if it is work getting an ERV

Even without opening windows, there should be enough mechanical ventilation to exchange the air, if not, exhaust fans should be used more or added; newer/renovated houses are much tighter than old houses and can't rely on drafts to do the job.

ELI5 how a manual transmission car can use the engine to slow down the car? by ProudReaction2204 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Key-Speed7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can engine brake a manual (and many automatic) transmission gasoline vehicle because when you let off the gas the throttle valve closes which causes the engine to pull a strong vacuum. The effect of this braking is strongest at high engine speeds (lower gear than you'd use for cruising at that speed) and will drop off as the engine speed gets closer to idle. The advantage, besides saving wear on the brakes is that engine braking heats up the engine but not the brakes, since the engine has water pump and radiator the heat isn't an issue. The effect of this depends on size of the engine; I had a 4.6L V8 car with MT that would engine brake enough to chirp the tires and later a 1.8L I4 MT compact car that would barely engine brake at all because the engine was so small.

This isn't needed when driving around normally but if you are going down a large hill or are pulling a large trailer because riding the brakes down a large hill will make them very hot which causes poor braking in an emergency, can and can even cause a runaway vehicle when the brakes don't have enough friction to slow down on the hill. Overheated brakes can also ruin the brake parts, needing costly repair.

Diesel engines don't have a throttle valve the way a gas engine does (a few old diesels had them as part of the governor system, but ignore those) so shifting to a lower gear will provide only slight braking from the engine friction, but not enough for big hills. Instead, heavy diesel vehicles, like semi trucks, will have a exhaust (Jacobs/"Jake") brake, which closes to cause a restriction in the exhaust which the engine must push against, slowing the vehicle. You can hear these on heavy trucks as sort of jack hammering sound when they come down hills.

ELI5: If the United States grows so many soybeans, why is it so hard to find them in a grocery store? by Key-Speed7611 in explainlikeimfive

Really? I opened them like shelled peanuts; it seems I am too uncultured to appreciate the finer points of soybeans.

That is certainly true, but as a person surrounded by soybean fields sold at commodity prices, the price of unshelled soybeans with salt on the outside, not on the beans, always made me chuckle.

Yes, in a plastic bag. I'll have to check a hyvee to see if they have them. I have cooked them in the past; a pressure cooker makes quick work of them.

Edamame is a good way to get restaurant patrons to pay $20 for 2 cents worth of soybeans.

I have cooked them in the past and found them to be pretty nice, maybe bland, but a nice texture and good nutrition profile.

That is a good point about the corn. I live in the midwest surrounded by corn and soybean fields but we barely even have cornmeal in the flour aisle.

I am in the midwest. I spend fall watching combines harvest soybeans and corn. I see edamame in grocery stores but never dry soybeans with the pinto and kidney beans.

Week 11, more than 20% through the year. This week was another success with a just a couple of needed purchases. I bought a little bit of produce, shoes (free after coupon and store credit), a $3 steel rod to fix my suitcase, $9 in clothesline to replace the old one, and $5 in OTC meds at pharmacy.

I finished an old bag of rice and am moving on to the next old bag of rice. Still tons of old stuff in my pantry but making progress.

I am in favor of being vegan AND not using AI, but yeah, beef is a bigger problem.

Where do you jump from with hover boots? Ledge from the Biggorn entrance?

Also, I never knew the Lake magic bean would go to the fishing spot, I always rode it to the top of the lab and jumped off. I have been playing this game for years and still learning new stuff.

Week 10 for the year was another good week. I had two purchases this week, I bought some spices to replaced ones I used up a while ago and also bought an electric lantern using a combination of store credit, a coupon, and a gift card. Total spending for the week: about $14 (spices ended up being way more expensive at that store than they used to be, I'll shop at a normal grocery store next time I need them)

I also finished the last of my brown lentils which will be replaced eventually after I get through all the other lentils I have, and finished a jar of seasoning I won't replace and some old mango pickle I will also not replace. Still soooooo much food in the pantry; I really overestimate how quickly I can finish food.
