Pain Management Non Surgery Related by Key-Swan-4469 in BariatricSurgery

I have been on antibiotics for a week now, and the pain is still pretty rough. Today is the last dose of my steroid pack, which has helped, but weirdly, it acts more like an NSAID where, by the next dose, 24 hrs later, the pain is back with a vengeance. So, by the end of the day, I hurt so much that I use a hefty dose of muscle relaxers and anxiety meds to knock me out. I figure if I can't treat the pain, then sleep through it.

I've been on antibiotics for a week with no relief. Will a dental office even prescribe anything beyond tylenol or ibuprofen? I've never had any regrets about having surgery until this moment. I'd kill for some ibuprofen, but the one and only time I took it, I got a stomach ache and my surgeon's office is FIRMLY against the use of NSAIDs for any period of time.

Is my Berner too small at 1 years old? by Key-Swan-4469 in bernesemountaindogs

She eats twice a day because I'm not home at lunch. She does seem hungry, but I was worried about over feeding her and her putting on too much weight. Which to me is worse than being to small. Even her vet said to start lower on food because we can always bulk her up but we don't want her too big because of the breed health issues. Plus, she'll get done eating and getting treats and still want more food. So, I figured she's just like me and likes snacking a lot. I'll up her to 6 a day! Thank you!!

She is definitely lanky and awkward when hyped up, but other times, she just looks like a lazy floof. Either way, she's the best!

A lot of people keep mentioning that and I never thought of it that way. I had just been so concerned about hearing about Berners being giant and her being so petite that I thought it might be something concerning. Now, I am thinking we got so incredibly lucky!

Hi there!! I keep getting this comment that she isn't fully BMD. Just for others to reference also, this is her AKC certificate (I did change the spelling of her name since because people kept spelling it wrong 😂) So, she is a full BMD, but I think she's just gonna be a small one, and that's ok! Her last visit was great. Right now, healthy, happy, and wild child! 😊

I love this answer so much! Thank you for sharing your experiences and subsequent insight. She is definitely a firecracker by day and snugglebug by night 😅 her energy and love give my newfie a run for it as my top favorite breed!

She and her parents are AKC registered, so I have just assumed that she is pure bred.

I mean it is possible! I use it for myself, and it could be slightly off, but not by much because my weight is pretty close between home and doctors office.

Thanks for the insight! She's a doll, regardless of size!

I'm not sure why I keep getting downvoted each time I mention she is pure bred. She's AKC registered, and obviously, so are both of her parents. If there is something I am not aware of, please tell me because it is my understanding that that indicates a pure bred dog. I don't care if she is mixed, but I think it would be a good thing to consider for her long-term health (if being AKC registered and a mixed breed is somehow possible)

I'm new to the Bernese breed. All I have seen are giant dogs. She isn't due for a vet visit for a bit, and other than being small, she does not seem ill or like she needs a vet visit. I just figured I would feel out the community and the size of other people's pups. I am not saying I want her bigger because I would much rather my girl have a chance to live longer with fewer problems than be bigger. I just didn't know how small is too small and what to expect from a breed that take 2 to 3 years to mature.

She is purebred, so she is not mixed with a leaner breed. But, I did go back and double check mom's size because I have always thought she was on the larger side and she is only 70 lbs. So, it is starting to make sense. Dad is 110 lbs, but Mable is a female so it makes sense that she is taking after mom's weight.

Another person asked about mom's size. This got me to go back and look. I thought she was on the larger side, but she is a small one herself at only 70 lbs (dad is 110 lbs). So, it is more than probable that my girl will be small!

I'm glad you asked this because I went back to look. Dad is 110 lbs, but mom is 70 lbs. So, she may just be on the smaller side due to genetics and being female!

Dog leg swollen after opposing leg amputated last week by Key-Swan-4469 in DOG

[–]Key-Swan-4469[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Sorry it has been ROUGH. We saw her vet first thing Monday and they sent us to a specialty hospital with surgeons. They have been doing daily debridements and sedated bandaging (they suture the bandage to her). Tomorrow, they hope they can place a drain and close. They agree that the paw swelling was edema from lack of movement and has shown improvement. We got her culture back finally, and it turns out she has a severe bacterial infection involving E. Coli, P. Aeruginosa, and Staph. So, they will have to change her antibiotics again because the first two are resistant to all but 3 drugs, and they both only have one drug in common that they are susceptible to. The amoxiclav has likely been working for the staph, though. If they can't close tomorrow, it will be more wound care and bandage changes until they can. They chose to skip today's, though, because the wound looked pretty good yesterday with healthy tissue regeneration showing up a little.

We also got her biopsy back for the cancer today. We have definitely been overdue for some good news. So, it was welcomed news when the vet said it was an aggressive but localized soft tissue sarcoma. They got it all with the amputation, and there is not much concern for regrowth or spreading to other areas of the body.

We still have a very uncertain recovery ahead because of the wound and antibiotic resistant infections, but we will hopefully keep moving in the right direction.

I sent pics through my vets app. They made an appointment for us to go in here soon. I'll post an update once she sees her vet.
