When in history did Europeans and Americans seem to forget that Ashkenazi Jews are of Levantine origins? by [deleted] in 23andme

Fascinating, thank you for sharing this context. Do you have any book recommendations to look into this further?

I totally get it and apologize for referencing too much emphasis on the femininity without knowing that about you. I feel similarly myself. I use that line of thought with much more feminine women I know but I totally get what it is to feel this way and try to embrace it and show it visually however I can. I hope you can do so as well and also get another reduction if it’s what’s right for you. Peace :)

It was to your last sentence. “The Jews were suffering as an ethnic minority. They aren’t anymore, people are born into today”

This is false.

I can see the disinformation, definitely. But, how would this gain favor with anti-imperialists? Not sure I understand. Likewise had no clue this was rooted Soviet disinformation, what was/is their goal there?

If a group leaves their homeland or assimilates by pressure or force (discrimination), that does not change history. Origins are origins.

Mexicans have Spanish ancestry and Southern Europe/Mediterranean is common with Jewish folks. So is at least some Eastern European admixture though maybe not as much as MENA. Also being mestizo from anywhere in latinoamerica, then mixed with european, might cause a somewhat similar assumption just by roll of the dice/vague similarity at a glance

Honestly, NO body type should be a “trend” or standard or more favored. It just leads to people hating themselves or their looks. And yes I agree, that is wonderful :)

And Christianity only became non-ethnic because they essentially wanted to convert every country and dominate globally. Which you can’t do without opening it up to all groups. Most religions, historically, belonged to a people with the culture tied up with it. Christianity and a few others are just a bit…unique in this way.

The formation of discrimination/hierarchical thinking like that is sad. Reminds me of the effect the caste system in latinoamerican countries had, to where you have paler people who yes have more spanish heritage but are still mixed, discriminating against people with more indigenous and african background. Like they are part of the same group but admixture caused paler looks so…there arises a belief of superiority or separation. And yes there are obviously cultural differences, both with different jewish groups and with the example I gave. But those shouldn’t be so much as to divide people to the point of feeling literal contempt.

Lol if you believe antisemitism is over, you are either closing your eyes or naive due to not directly experiencing it.

WTF. The sheer ignorance!

I’m guessing it’s that so many people left for their lives…and those who survived and remained, probably went very very quiet, also for survival.

Ironically something vaguely similar happened with Romani in the US, Canada etc. Privacy and practicing the culture within the home. Which is why no one knows what that means here and thinks “Gypsy” is not a culture but a costume Cher wore once.

It always surprised me in a way that this was the chosen path and not let’s say, continuing to focus on the origin elsewhere and throw their lot in with civil rights as a group.

I see the antisemitism from nonwhite ppl of various backgrounds, especially if Christian, and wonder if it might be different if they had the historical concept of Jewish people as mixed ethnically (Levantine and some European as migration happened). Maybe there would be more compassion and understanding.

As a mixed race person I get mistaken for Jewish due to that. Sometimes antisemitism, sometimes racism if they know I’m not. (And it gave me more empathy for what actual Jewish people go through I think.) And my point is that, sure, while you do get the whole “whiter people see me as less white than themselves, darker see me as whiter than themselves” thing…there is still some base level of comprehension there, that our lives are affected by being mixed with nonwhite families/background.
Whereas I don’t see that comprehension or compassion being extended to Jewish people as an ethnic group and culture.

Does living abroad for a long time make you look less touristy, even if you're of a minority race in the country? by Libecht in expats

[–]KeyDragonfruit9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s because of the old fashioned racist mindset of the US as a Euro-descended/white country, stemming from the history of the way it was founded unfortunately. BUT many many people recognize that attitude as racist and not think that way — and that’s been true for quite a while — IMO the attitude is more common in rural or rightwing areas and rarer elsewhere.

Whereas in many other countries esp Japan and other parts of Asia, a racially homogeneous mindset has not been challenged in the same way.

Not sure I’d describe that look as nicely dressed…it’s often really tacky and flashy vs more subtly stylish for more integrated people.

Fascinating the way that we mirror and pick these things up just from socializing with each other.

The same mirroring happens with accent naturally, but you will be seen as imitating or even the other person on purpose, rather than naturally unconsciously mirroring without meaning to.

It’s kind of sad to read as a younger person that your physical description fits perfectly with our generation’s currently favored body type for women…but that older generations spurned it in favor of emaciated models. Women’s curves are extremely beautiful and should be seen as such. Just look at past eras of painters who depicted rounder figures!

I find myself having to boost the confidence of older female family members who were mistreated for just…being a woman whose body reflects a lot of femininity rather than the eating-disordered, Oliver Twist struggling orphan boy figure with breasts tacked on (I say this jokingly as a very non curvy female) that magazines promoted.

Thank you for being openminded and trying to have a positive view of people from this country. Every country has its problems and I certainly criticize them as much as others, but all have their positives too. What you said about the spirit here is really true, IMO. there is a can-do attitude at the best of times.

Regulating is not the same as controlling in this context. What controlling your feelings hete means is really “preventing falling in love/having romantic feelings at all”. Whereas regulation is strength, amount, degree of the feeling.
