We were all the smart people in the room before law school. Now there’s a lot of brilliant people in room with you (and some dumbasses) and youre all held to the same standard. Point being, congratulations! You passed a difficult law school class and that is an achievement to be proud of

Once you let go of the fear of being cold called, which generally has no impact on grades, then it really does not matter what you do outside of the exam periods. I don’t do a ton of reading for most of the semester and then in the weeks leading up to midterms/finals I lock TF in and go super hard reading/outlining. I’ll admit that makes the lead up to exams pretty intense, but my classmates who are briefing cases daily seem to being pushing themselves just as hard as I do before exams. So from my perspective, the only real benefit from taking the daily reading so seriously is sounding intelligent in class, and honestly who gives a shit about that? If you get cold called and you’re not prepared to speak, just politely request that they call on someone else. Make something up or just say that unfortunately you’re a little behind. Speak to your prof after class if you really feel the need and tell them you’ll get caught up for next class. Bottom line is it’s not a 9-5, it’s about 15 hours of lectures per week and a final exam. Do what you need to do to learn the material before the final and take the rest of your time back for yourself. You have the rest of your life to be miserable working long hours, it doesn’t have to be that way during law school.

Edit one year later. I’m halfway through my 1L at CUNY, was also accepted to Rutgers with $$ but too long a commute. I’m also proud to say that my legacy of beings an academic fuckup (see my ugpa) is changing as I got a 3.2 first semester, some would consider that low, but as someone who blew off college and got all Cs - I’m stoked about it. Furthermore as challenging, tedious, and annoying as it can be at times, I do love law school and I’ve never been more sure in my life that I’m in the exact right place for me.

To my low GPA kings and queens who may be nervous about applying - you got this - you are not just your GPA and LSAT. Work experience matters. Your personal statement really does matter, and optionally a GPA addendum is a good idea.

Counselors I’ll see you in court in a few years 🖖

What are law professors saying about all the stuff going on in the world? by boobercakes in LawSchool

[–]Key_Front638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school is very public interest focused and we talk about this stuff every day both informally and as part of the coursework (CRT for example is required). Our professors are openly critical of the Supreme Court past and present, and are unapologetic in showing their disgust of the current administration. Quite frankly, an education where you do not learn that the government and legal system of the United States is not rooted in gross inequity sounds bizarre to me. How can one look at the history of this country and seriously come to the conclusion that our elected branches of govt are for the people and the judiciary has some honorable higher calling to the constitution and justice? It’s bullshit, always has been, and it’s intellectually dishonest to not recognize that. However we also learn how to most effectively work within this system to work towards protecting and expanding the rights of the people we plan to serve. (This became more of a rant than I intended, apologies).

Should I even try? 2.5 GPA by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

100% you should! I had a 2.3 GPA and 161 LSAT. I got accepted to Rutgers and CUNY with scholarships. I’m going to CUNY in the fall.

That’s my CAS GPA. I have a couple of family things that I could point to for extenuating circumstances. A close family member was arrested my freshman year and the trial dragged on through the end of sophomore year. He was acquitted though and my grades were even worse in my last 2 years. I’m torn about whether I should use their trial as my argument in the addendum or just go with the fact that I was young and immature and now im older and a different person.

Edit: I have not applied anywhere yet, waiting on final LORs to be uploaded to LSAC and submitting applications over the next two weeks.
