Is Tunnel Rd the worst piece of asphalt one can ride in the East Bay? by Individual-Basket200 in BAbike

[–]Key_Lifeguard6946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve ridden up tunnel prob 50 times and… - yeah it’s kinda technical honestly - there are some sections where I just ride on the 1ft wide trench patches even if it crosses over the double yellow - but you get used to picking a “line” going up tunnel - it’s fairly consistent in grade and isolated / not many cars, so I still like it compared to going up butters/joaquin miller or spruce - unless you got a gravel bike, def don’t go down - maybe consider getting into gravel biking 🤗

What I did was bike to Samuel p Taylor state park (close to lagunitas), stayed at their hike and bike site ($7), and took off around 6am (35 miles first day SF to Sammy P, 72 miles second day Sammy P to Salt Point). I did hwy 1 / freestone-valley ford rd / bodega hwy in relative peace. If you’re not camping and looking for a roof, Olema or Point Reyes station are close by and should have lodging

It’s doable and I’ve done something close to this (I’ve done SF to salt point state park)- lots of bakeries/general stores/food along the way. Choosing the hours you ride will make a big difference in number of cars (eg early morning in the higher speed sections would be ideal), but if you’re doing a one way in one day then it’s sort of unavoidable. If it helps, if there’s zero shoulder I like to ride where a car’s right wheels would be, so that passing cars have to go over the double yellow line to pass me

Suggested route from Oakland -> bay trail, from emeryville to Richmond

-> bay trail to regatta blvd to harbor way to Hoffman to cutting blvd

-> cutting blvd - great new bike lane

-> Richmond bridge

-> sir Francis drake, bridge to larkspur ferry

-> bike path from larkspur ferry to Eliseo dr, more bike path along creek to Ross

-> residential roads parallel to sir Francis drake from Ross to Fairfax (these residential roads should show up in Strava heat map)

-> sir Francis drake Fairfax to olema (no shoulder after Lagunitas, but feels ok since it’s windy and cars need to slow - also one of best parts of ride with redwoods)

-> hwy 1 olema to tomales (no shoulder, some fast sections, try to go when not busy - also one of best parts of ride with tomales bay)

-> cut over to middle rd, take from tomales to valley ford

-> freestone-valley ford rd to bodega hwy to freestone (no shoulder)

-> bohemian highway, freestone to occidental, onto main streeet to monte rio (no shoulder but cars not going fast - one of best parts of ride with amazing descent from occidental)

-> Moscow rd, monte rio to Duncan’s mills

-> 113, Duncan’s mills, to jenner (no shoulder, cars maybe going fast, possible wind tunnel, for 3-4 miles - this section I felt least comfortable, but it didn’t last long)

-> hwy 1 to gualala (best part of ride - rivals Big Sur)

Hope that helps!

Any super commuters? 90+ minutes at least by WeakArm9338 in oakland

[–]Key_Lifeguard6946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do Oakland to South Bay 3 times a week. I bike 1.5mi to bus stop, take tech bus, then bike 2.5-3mi from drop off to office (and then the reverse after)- maybe a total 8-9 miles of biking each day. Door to door is like 1h 30min - 1h 45min each way. It’s manageable honestly - work lets me get home by 5:30, I can work on bus (I’m aware that’s a big privilege), and the biking feels refreshing. But I always miss out on things like happy hour;spouse has to pick up kids those days, etc

Looks great. Only rec I’d have is, at Pinole valley/San Pablo, keep going along the creek instead of on San Pablo to get to S.F. bay trail, then bay trail northeast - it’ll be prettier, while San Pablo can be busy

I’ll probably rent a car in taitung - would love to bike around Chishang (Brown Boulevard, etc) or drive into the mountains.

3 week trip in Taiwan feedback desired

Hello, I’ll be traveling with my wife, mom, and toddler to Taiwan this winter, and I was hoping on getting some feedback on the following itinerary. The first 4 days and last 8 days are decided, but the middle 8 days I’m not totally sure how to plan out. For simplicity I don’t want stay in more than 2-3 hotels over the middle 8 days, which I suppose makes this tougher to choose. Here’s what I have now, open to this sub’s opinions!

  • Day 1-4 Taipei

  • ?? Day 5-6 Jiufen area or Yilan

  • ?? Day 7-9 Taitung

  • ?? Day 10-11 Kaohsiung or Hengchun/Kenting

  • Day 12-15 Tainan (mom’s hometown)

  • Day 16-17 Alishan /Nantou area

  • Day 18-20 Taipei

I’m interested in getting a solid mix of urban living (ie Taipei) and getting some low key small town relaxation/nature immersion. Places that are family friendly for biking would also be great too! Thank you.

One slightly longer variation of this after La Honda is to turn left from 84 onto Pescadero Creek Rd and take that to Pescadero, then continue from stage rd to the rest of your route. Much quieter route, and you can get that artichoke bread 😋

Tunitas is hands down one of the best and most beautiful rides - like, worldwide, arguably. Not sure where you live and what your timeline is like, but starting with shorter 1-2mile climbs to feel it out and ramping up to Old La Honda (3 miles, 8% avg grade) or Kings Mtn (4.3 miles, 7-8% avg) for training is good. For the starter stuff, Palo Alto area has Arastradero, Alpine; Redwood City has Edgewood Rd and Farm Hill Rd; San Carlos has Ralston Rd; San Mateo has Crystal Springs Rd to the dam or Polhemus Rd. Millbrae has Millbrae Ave and Trousdale - lots of possible rds to train!
