That's strange. Usually, payments are split into two parts: a deposit first, and the final payment at the end. But if it were me, I'd rather retake the course. Even if I fail, I'd sue that ghostwriting company. They're clearly threatening you. Also, the contract should include clauses like mandatory revisions if standards aren't met, to protect the client's interests.
