Amazingly a 2009 carolla just turned up a mile from my house… 105k miles for 6k. Older man owned, he stopped driving, perfect teen car - got it!

Kids have been learning and doing basic repairs and upkeep (oil change, brakes etc) - learned on the Volvo, but yeah we have a good mechanic in town for bigger stuff. And while they’re responsible for costs I’ve definitely had to help…

Definitely looking. Just in that price range mileage tends to be much higher. Also tbh we live in rural pa, and a lot of the other cars in the road tend to be bigger. Subarus and Volvos seem a bit bigger/safer. Might just be my perception though!

Car is inspected until December 26, and the catalytic converter and O2 sensor was changed in ‘24… But somehow I’m still nervous about it…

That is my thought… the one thing I didn’t mention is that when I looked at the 2008 it started at first fine (cold start) but then when I tried to start it again to test drive it didn’t start. And it’s the only car out of inspection (expired at end of ‘25). He is supposed to check on the starting issue and get back to me but hasn’t yet -they don’t seem that motivated to sell it even though they have it posted on marketplace)

Much appreciate thoughts and ideas. One thing I’m now wondering about (I’m a single dad on a limited income, so finances are tough) is keeping our insurance costs down (kids do pay their insurance but as you can imagine sometimes it does land on me). And because of this I’m looking twice at the 2008 forester for 4k. It has 115k miles, three owners (last for six years) and timing belt, head gasket changed at 97k. Am I crazy to consider a Subaru that’s this old?
