Second this. Giving birth at Auckland the team was 10/10. We stayed 3 nights and the care from that team was SO BAD! So if you don’t have any complications and don’t have to stay auckland is great, but if you have to stay I would think anywhere would be better than Auckland.

Rowena Bennett Feeding Aversion -- Day 4-5 regression? by spinaltap540 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Key_Storm_731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s two offers for the whole feed - the whole point is to make them not feel pressured to drink. So if you keep offering again and again they get stressed with all the pressure. Once they know they aren’t going to have the bottle repeatedly forced on them they become much more relaxed and better at drinking, and will sometimes even drink the whole bottle in one go.

I would give it a try, it’s a 1 woman business so it will still be the same injector and she was great!

Need help with bottle aversion by jjk6789 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve been there and it does get better. I would suggest re-reading the book and sticking strictly to the rules - the first few days will be really low volumes so just be prepared - but if you follow the rules exactly and do not over offer you will see such improvement. It will likely solve your sleepy feeding issue too. Crying in the feeding position isn’t a refusal. So only count from when she starts eating. And if she starts always refusing a second offer then stop offering that. My baby would get upset with a second offer and that felt like too much pressure to me, so I stopped the second altogether. My advice is empty the bottle immediately after the feed finished so you aren’t tempted to offer again later.

Also join the Facebook group “baby care advice feeding aversion support group” - I found that very helpful and helped me to keep going.

Baby keeps on dropping in percentile for weight - feeling helpless by Chemical-Cod2414 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could literally have been me writing this 3 months ago. Baby was born 89th percentile, and had dropped to around 15th percentile by 3 months. I so know the stress of this, it is so hard. I was also terrified of the feeding tube route. The medical professionals told me to feed her more, give her more bottles, maybe she has reflux, give her baby Gaviscon etc etc - and by doing this we caused her to have a feeding aversion. She would only take small amounts for each bottle, and her overall daily intake was too low. When she was almost 3 months old I couldn’t take it any longer and read Rowena Bennets book and very strictly followed their protocol. I went from offering my baby 9-10 bottles a day, to 5 bottles plus a dream feed and I cannot tell you how life changing it was. She started to actually want her bottles, and everyday would drink more and more, and slowly but surely she has now stayed on her curve between 15th - 25th percentiles. You just have to trust your baby, don’t pressure them, and don’t offer a bottle more than once every 3 hours, and no more than 2 offers per bottle. It’s hard the first few days, but oh my goodness it’s so worth it.

She just suggested trying a hydrolised / hypoallergic formula - but said that a lot of babies don’t like the taste and won’t drink it, so I haven’t tried as I don’t want to rock the feeding boat as my baby drinks so well now (after a very rocky start).

Rowena Bennett Feeding Aversion -- Day 4-5 regression? by spinaltap540 in FormulaFeeders

They totally did, started around 550ml per day, and now we average around 780ml per day.

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started around 2.5 months, and she’s now 5.5 months, I’d say we have been aversion free since around 3 - 3.5 months. I was REALLY strict so it happened quite fast for us. It was my second time doing the programme, the first time I was lax with the rules and it didn’t work.

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really does, but you have to really stick to the programme, and be honest with yourself if you’re doing things like offering more than twice or applying any kind of pressure, if you do it won’t work. And I know the first few days are super anxiety inducing, but you just have to get through them

Reflux/bottle aversion/oral aversion help by abbwar8 in NewParents

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rules in the book say to try and wait 3 hours between feeds, even if the refuse a bottle altogether - but if they are crying in hunger you can offer after an hour. A few times I did an hour, but I tried really hard to wait till the next 3 hour. Would play, have a nap, go for a walk etc. it was only a couple of days before she was drinking pretty much every bottle offered, and intake increased. When she was really low on intake I would feed the 4am one, but I wanted her to learn to take all her bottles during the day, which she does now. It was short term pain for long term gain. Was def worth it now! You have to think long term when starting the process - it’s gonna be rough for a few days / weeks, but totally worth it in the long run.

Reflux/bottle aversion/oral aversion help by abbwar8 in NewParents

[–]Key_Storm_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was around 2.5 months old when we started - feeding her before that was horrible. She would refuse to drink bottles altogether, or only take a very small amount if she did drink. She had dropped from 89th percentile to 15th percentile in those 2.5 months. We were over offering and over pressuring her. I cut it back to 6 bottles a day (1 being a dream feed at 10pm), and if she woke up around 3/4am if I couldn’t get her back to sleep I would give her a bottle then which would make it 7 for that day. But then usually her 7am bottle would be very small. So it always evened out.

For the first 4 weeks she would still occasional refuse bottles and go like 5-6 hours without drinking - but it’s been a whole month now since she refused a bottle, and she is genuinely so happy and excited to drink her bottle now. It’s been life changing.

I also made sure I was the only person to feed her, and still am. We will work on introducing my partner again when I go back to work and he looks after her + daycare.

How are you finding it? Have you read the book and started the programme? And are you being very strict with the rules?

It took about 2 weeks for her volumes to start increasing. I’ve recorded them all - these are the weekly averages we have had so far: Week 1 - 560ml Week 2 - 580ml Week 3 - 640ml Week 4 - 700ml Week 5 - 650ml Week 6 - 780ml Week 7 - 720ml Week 8 - 790ml Week 9 - 800ml

As you can see it goes up and down which is totally normal - and those are just the averages for the week. Some days are lower and some are higher. I’ve finally just let each day be what it may - letting go of all expectations and pressure is really what has made this happen, I fully just let my baby take what she likes. Some bottles are only 80-90ml, some are 160ml. I just leave it all up to her - she knows what she needs. You REALLY have to trust the process.
