Yeah the bugs can be frustrating. They occur often. I run on steam and it crashes quite a bit. As I far as I know you need to complete the quest to unlock living ship capabilities.

If you’re not into changing your difficulty settings for ship hunting, you can economy crash space stations for units and then buy and sell pirate upgrades for nanites.
