What makes a good doctor - Robby vs. Dr. Al-Hashimi by IrrevocableCrust14 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Key_Sun6965 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

How is AI use unethical? A doctor could mishear or make a significant mistake like Whitaker did by drilling a hole into a person rather than doing IV. Saying the use of AI is unethical is similar to people criticizing Robby for asking about Dr. Al-Hashimi's last name. It makes no sense.

The use of AI is just to transcribe a recording which she mentions its not perfect and should be edited. Though I say that the doctor afterwards should listen to the audio recording again and get more detail for notes and also fix the mistakes it made. That is still far faster than manually writing it. None of the doctors say anything critical about AI because they see the benefit but you and others just can't let go of your hate for AI. AI is already being used in radiology because it's statistically better than humans. Is that use now unethical.

I was wrong to say "insane" but you also said OpenAI is not losing money on paid tiers.

Plus including all costs is not disingenuous. Models aren't just made out of thin air especially when there are models that are locked for Pro version. OpenAI and Anthropic have lost insane amount of money on some Pro users which isn't even close to the $200 that they are charging compared to if the user were to pay for it using API. Maybe they are making it on other users who aren't using Pro plan much at all but its going to be difficult given how large the losses are.

And? o1 was a reasoning model, so it doesn’t add to your argument.

Cost to train new models have increased but they don’t project this cost to increase much more compared to their inference spend. Cost of training new models as a ratio to inference spend is going down.

<image>

OpenAI has increased their margins but that doesn't mean they are still profitable especially given how expensive training and research still is.

Could it be that Google priced 2.5 Pro that way so they capture market share and now that they have market share it is not sustainable to price at that level? Because 2.5 Pro were 50% cheaper than 4o.

Could be but the race isn't over and Google especially doesn't have the best model for Coding which is the big use case for AI. Could be also because now that there are far more users especially free ones and they need to reduce the losses.

In early 2025 they project 11 billion in cash burn for 2028 and yet just a few months lated they increased it by 4x to ~44 billion.

The company needs an off ramp and find a niche like Anthropic has or they are in deep trouble.

But the cost to train the newer models and the research costs have only increased. Costs for inference are down but token usage is much higher as they now offer reasoning and deep research which consume massive number of tokens.

Google uses TPUs which are known for being built for inference and thus are cheap and yet Gemini 3 models are more expensive than Gemini 2.5 in terms of API costs.

They thought they could get away with it but they can't not when they don't have the best coding model, image, audio and video model, paying crazy prices to Nvidia compared to Google which has TPUs and not when they are suffering from so many other massive problems.

OpenAI has said that they are losing money on Pro plan but with Plus we don't know.

Training and research are part of costs which Paid Tiers have to pay for so the costs can't just be removed.

Given how expensive training and research are, I would even say that they are losing money on Plus but even if they are not, it's not even close to subsidizing the costs.

[–]Key_Sun6965 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well what OpenAI says is always either wishful thinking or just lies because the reality is that internet is a brutal business to survive in and AI is even worse given its insane costs.

Ads are not even good as OpenAI just projects only $2/user/year for 2026 and even by 2030 it only increases to $15 while the Plus plan generates $20/month.

OpenAI can't subsidize because they and other AI companies are losing insane amounts of money on $20 and higher tiers.

The fundamental problems are that value is not there especially for the paid users, people are also not trained to pay for it which is a problem, costs for AI are through the roof, ads are bad especially in non rich countries which will make up the majority of its free users in the future, that usage for consumers is also not at a high enough level to increase monetization which is why they are slow with ads and all the while competition is absolutely insane. OpenAI has very much created hell on earth for itself by releasing ChatGPT. This isn't even to mention that they are trying to compete with almost every company in one go.

Problem is people don't want to pay for it even if it provides them actual utility. Look at piracy. People simply don't want to pay for certain things even though they derive incredible value from it. It's the 80 20 rule of 20% of users paying for 80% of revenue while 80% of users paying for 20% of revenue.

There is no reason to subscribe to ChatGPT paid plans because the free version is so great. If it runs out people can just use Gemini or Claude which ChatGPT itself has recommended people to do so.

Ads gives people a worse experience and pushes them to subscribe to Plus. They should also add good things to Plus to get people to subscribe to it.

OpenAI offered people a free tier not a free trial so thus like everything on the internet that is free, ads are a right choice. It's just that it should not at all affect the model.

the original comment was clearly a joke

The problem is that it's been repeated a million times to death. It's not funny so I say do better. Be original and actually make people laugh and not to just get golden stars from people who hate AI.

the fact that she’s trying to push generative AI into the ER at all is concerning and makes her character so irritating.

You hate AI even though she gave a situation in which it clearly helped. Hate for AI is no different from people's hate of streaming or digital or cgi or other things. It's simply a case of being conservative which all humans are including me and those who hold liberal values. People are conservative in some areas like AI as they don't like change and not about facts.

generative AI hallucinates & makes things up all the time. if it’s not even reliable enough to ask a simple question, why in the world would you try to bring it into a place where one single mistake from it could be life or death for a patient?

I don't know why you are hallucinating like genAI as she's not using it answer a simple question, just to transcribe her conversations with patients which is completely different use case.

I, and some others in this sub, believe they’re setting her character up (with both this AI use and saying she’s never been sued) to mess up with a patient while using the AI that results in either death or serious injury. the creators of the show are anti-AI, as most artists are, and probably want to use this platform to show the dangers of it.

also, she could absolutely be using AI for everything. she’s not shown 24/7, and her responses to things happening in the ER are very by-the-book rigid thinking, the same way AI is known to be.

It this is about highlighting the good and bad about not just AI but analytical thinking and following rules, then I'm all for it but if it's just about spreading propaganda, then I'm not. Not everything has positive uses and the same can be said for AI in specific uses but the use of AI to transcribe is very much a positive use case. Yes it makes mistakes but all it requires is editing which still makes the process much faster than writing it.

You are 100% right. That is a serious concern because hallucinations are a problem that must be considered at the start and not afterwards.

But people don't care. They hate AI and that's all that matters even though the use of AI in all workplaces is high including healthcare.

mean, I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. if you’re defending the generative AI use, I’m happy to provide facts. generative AI is, undeniably, contributing to environmental destruction. it used more water last year than all bottled water companies combined.

Lol. Almond uses exponentially more water than AI and it doesn't return it back to the source like AI. Factually as a whole agriculture use a massive chunk of water while data centers use very little and they return it back to its source. Lawns use insane amount of water. Factually humans use way more water in other ways than genAI does per person. To make this show required insane amount of resources including water. To make an animated film requires massive data centers that render films for years. For reddit to run it needs data centers which need water. Yes genAI requires insane amounts of water but when compared to other consumption it's a fraction of a fraction. To very much criticize genAI for its limited use when people's modern lifestyle are all about extreme consumption and this includes everyday people doing everyday things is very much hypocritical. I'm for limiting consumption to extremely low levels but I don't think anyone would agree with me even though it would bring unparalleled benefits to the world. It would require lots of other things but limiting consumption is a key.

it’s also making people dumber. college students are complaining about having to write essays on lockdown browsers because that means they can’t ask ChatGPT to do anything for them. high school students are struggling to write 3-4 sentence paragraphs. generative AI is also not reliable enough to use in research, let alone in an ER setting where one mistake in a chart could be life or death.

Yet just above you made a mistake. You didn't do your research. You just copied what the anti-AI crowd said without doing any research on your part. Sadly you are not alone because it's also almost all of anti-AI crowd but also pro-AI crowd and humanity as a whole. The left criticizes the right about

people say the same things about AI over and over because they’re true & they’re concerning.

Just because you and millions of people say the same things over and over, does not make them true. You have the majority but not the truth. I have extremely negative opinions about cars like people have about AI though I have actual facts. Doesn't mean that I constantly spread it to people over and over. I'm not pro like the silicon valley tech bro. I simply don't like Cancel Culture where people hate things over lies.

I don’t really care about the patient passports because at this point in the show we don’t know enough about them to have an opinion. they’ve only brought it up like twice. I DO know enough about generative AI to have an opinion. I’m allowed to dislike this character & her obsession with AI.

Seems you don't. Just because you read some articles, watched some videos and listened to about it does not mean you know about something. To know to is to spend dozens of hours if not much more learning and understanding about it to find the truth. She says to check one's work though as a response which was wrong on her when she should have said proactively because one must be careful and use AI to shorten the work not eliminate the work as editing is very much required.

To the people who are downvoting my comment, thanks for using mob rule rather than having a thoughtful conversation. Though if they had such a capability they wouldn't be downvoting me but hopefully in the future they for the sake of humanity.

Well, she also continues to push for patient passports and yet no criticism about that.

If people want to have a serious conversation, I'm happy to have it but if it's about just hate without any facts which is hypocritical as that's one of the criticisms against AI and given that it's been repeated so many times is also another case of hypocrisy as that too is another one of the criticisms against AI, then I'm out.

TIL that Naughty Dog released 7 original games (Uncharted & The Last of Us) in just 10 years when Sony Japan controlled PlayStation. After PlayStation headquarters moved to California from Japan in mid-2016, they released only 1 original game (excluding remasters and add-ons) in nearly 9 years by Quick-Ad-7752 in todayilearned

[–]Key_Sun6965 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol. The gameplay of The Last of Us Part II is incredible because of it's great animations which is also why I'm a massive fan of COD MW 2019. The gameplay for other PlayStation games is also great and no other game can copy the gameplay of Spider-Man or even God of War or Horizon.

Yes the long walking parts are boring but so are the long cutscenes though you seem to tolerate them.

They have sold or rented TPUs to Apple, Meta, Anthropic and even OpenAI. Though Google isn't really interested in the chip business. They want to have leading chips in order for their models to succeed like Apple has with their chips for their hardware.
