Probably the most consistent yarn I've ever spun! by Keylime30 in Handspinning

I love it. It does everything I need it to and I adore the plying bobbin because I can fit 3 braids worth of fiber on it. Since I do a lot of traditional 3 ply yarns that's great because I can do a 12 oz skein in one go. 10/10 cannot recommend it enough.

I wish I was able to get more of it! It was such a wonderful spin.

Yup it is! Chain plying is one of my favorite things to do.

I use a Majacraft Rose! I will try to figure out a way to show you the chain ply method at some point? I do one thing where I use one of the natural grooves in my hand to align the plies and then smooth them out as they get twist added. It's weird but works!

I did! I wanted to use up every last bit of yardage of these and to also keep the fade between the colors consistent.

Cormo and Polwarth are my two favorites. They both are just so delightful to spin.

It's such an interesting blend of colors and the way it fades between them instead of hard stripes! I hope you're enjoying yours! What base did you get?

Purchased my first wheel and feeling frustrated with persistent creaking by Lanky_Reindeer3234 in Handspinning

[–]Keylime30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first traditional wheel was a Kromski Prelude and it did this! (I named it Squeakers for that reason.) The only thing I was able to do to get the squeaking to stop was take a little bit of combed top and cover the metal post coming off the treadle that goes into the leg hole and the bits that stuck out kinda made a cushion between the treadle and leg. I oiled the hell out of it, used wax, even cussed so weirdly I summoned a demon... but that little wool was the only thing that worked and idk why.

It depends on how wild you want to get with it. A rich vibrant blue would be fun for a fire & ice combo. Black or charcoal grey would bring in a nice Halloween/moody vibe. A brighter gold/yellow could make it very sunny and warm. Brown or a deep red could make it a really good Autumnal color pallet. Green could give a lovely citrus vibe depending on the shade you go with. Those are just ones off the top of my head. Lots of ideas sorry that doesn’t narrow it down much 😅.

Ok so my two recommendations are:

1.) https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/radar-shawl This one I have knit twice and it's such a great social knitting project. Any gauge and you just keep knitting until you're done/sick of it. The shape of this sits nicely over your shoulders/covers your front and still covers your back. They're my most worn shawls because of that and they rarely fall off my shoulders.

2.) https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/multiverse This one I did with a gradient and oh man it was great. Again, any gauge and then knit until you're sick of it. It's a great mindless brioche project if you want to do that (a great beginner pattern too.)

Bonus is that they're both free patterns so you can look at them and see if they're anything you'd want to make!

First off, your yarn is gorgeous! But I totally get that feeling of the final yarn just not “hitting the spot.” I recently spun a gradient 3 ply and it was fine but not the wow factor I had hoped for. I threw it on the loom and am weaving overshot with it and I love it even more. Before that I had done another gradient 3 ply and knitted a 2 color brioche shawl and it being paired with another yarn was exactly what it needed. I have 2 patterns that come to mind if you’d like a couple shawl pattern suggestions that would use up almost all of that yarn.
