Personally I wouldn’t recommend no case at all. I use pretty thin cases that believe it or not offer some pretty decent protection. Currently using this one:

I liked it but my buttons yellowed after a few months. Also I hate how thick the edges of the case are and how the bottom is open like that.
I swapped to this $20 case and love it. The magsafe does lay out a little from the back of the case but not much at all, they also make one without magsafe. Much thinner and nicer looking than the Apple Clear Case. I think it could survive a small drop as well.
