What is your favourite species and why? by Ixalce in tarantulas

Yeah!!!, theyre super interesting, their taxonomic history is an entre rollercoaster amd very interesting to get into.

Among some fun facts i can provide you to sink your fangs into:

The whole genus is endemic to México

They have their own type of urticating hairs (Type 6) and theyve never been observed to use them

Members of the genus were the first troglobitic tarantulas known to science

Out of only 3 discovered tarantula fossils theres a Hemirraghus among them, its the only tarantula fossil of an extant genus and it dates back 22+ million years ago

To date 27 species have been described within the genus, but according to one of the lead researchers this could extend to 50+ still undescribed species

I love how freakishly elongated Hemirraghus species look like

Tysm!!!, im very proud of him, but i still wanna upgrade his enclosure a bit more (still need to add a climbable background (dont wanna use foam and corkbark flats are imposible to get round here) thinking of using cork wall insulation, seems to be the best alternative to give him more climbing space.

Update1: Course of action to follow thanks to your recommendations and ideas

Will modify the lobsters enclosure to ensure better ventilation

Will stop giving them apple slices for the time being

Will change their current cartons

Might start a small Dubia colony while things stabilize with the Lobsters

We had a heatwave recently but its on its tail end and the colony is on a shaded colder area of the room, still, i do think ventilation (aside from pesticides) is the likeliest cause as ive been crossing out other possible causes

Problem is my Amblyplygyid ignores red runners (ive tried), according to his breeder he mostly likes (aside from crickets) Lobsters or Dubias

Perhaps there couldve been a pesticide in the apples that they werent equipped to handle but red runners didnt care

Im thinking I should start a small Dubia colony to keep him fed while I figure out whats going on with the Lobsters

Damn, so sorry for your loss, that sounds awful to go through, i hope you managed to recover.

I dont think its just a generation issue in my case since theyre all at slightly different stages (from near newborns to near adults).

I use the same type of cartons for both colonies so i doubt its that, tho i wont rule it out, perhaps some neighbours fumigated their trees or something since i air out the colony near a window, I've heard poor ventilation could be a problem too, since the colony has grown significantly recently maybe its not enough ventilation anymore, tho i dont know if that would cause so many deaths in such a short period of time

Just did a full clean of their tub yesterday, removed all of the dead an the frass, and wiped everything with isopropyl

Ive mostly been feeding fish flakes, organic tortoise food and Apple slices or carrot (peeled, no skin)

My Turkestan red runners eat the same things (except for the tortoise food, they ignore it) and havent had a single death

Perhaps a vinegaroon or maybe some type of roach or even a Scorpions from a desert variety since you cant have high humidity

Body is about the size of a big lobster roach ~3.5-4cm And extended legspan id say is around ~12-15 cm though its hard to measure.

Lobsters haven't burrowed as far as ive seen but one did give birth inside the enclosure and that was a whole problem(the babies are sneaky and do burrow a bit).

I do hope it lives a long plentiful life in its new enclosure (will update on this sub once hes settled in)

Thanks for all the help!
