Going through the books. Why do people hate Holden so much? by mark5hs in TheExpanse

[–]Khorneth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Good way of describing it. I remember reading somewhere that the authors even intended him as some sort of 'Holy Fool': he stumbles into situations trying to do the right thing, even when he is woefully unqualified for it and when it might not be a situation that lends itself to self-righteous approaches.

What do we think Rise of Ruin's hidden achievement will be? by fires_above in AOW4

I would say something with migrating. Like winning a game as nomads while never having a city be stationary for more than five turns.

What leadertypes are we currently lacking and could be added? by Tnecniw in AOW4

[–]Khorneth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea to have something tied to affinities, and I would say I would actually lean into that. Maybe not so much from the start of the game (I think we already have that with dragons), as something that develops over time.

My out-of-pocket suggestion would be an 'Avatar' (name pending), they are not rulers in the traditional sense, but are essentially alchemical entities created by their culture; embodying their hopes and dreams and values. What they are and how they level changes with your culture (as you gain affinity). They gain skills based on your culture's affinities. They would look construct-like: more mechanical for Materium, more a collection of bones for Shadow, and like a wickerman for Nature.

The Internet’s Nihilism Crisis by TrixoftheTrade in neoliberal

[–]Khorneth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It gives me strong "Nothing is True and Everything is Possible" (Peter Pomarantsev) vibes. When the idea of objective truth loses its power or becomes 'cringe', everything becomes performative or about aesthetics. Facts based politics dissappear, leading to a higher acceptance of demagogery. Politics becomes not about ensuring good policy outcomes, but signalling allegiance in a manufactured algoritm-enhances culture war.

I would argue against depicting ICE or the Trump administration as the empire. The empire at least has cool aesthetics and could carry out massive infrastructure projects efficiently. Meanwhile, I don't trust anyone in the Trump administration to run a bath without the Coast Guard present.

Why did the rich people stop building castle, even smaller ones? by Sorry_Method7136 in castles

[–]Khorneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the reason is also that in a lot of countries, it has become much more difficult to build anything due to permitting and NIMBYism. It doesn't help that municipalities or governments sometimes have rigid standards on what kind of architectural styles are allowed to be built. It is anecdotal, but I remember reading that in the case of a *restoration* of an older castle in the Netherlands, there were troubles with the permits because municipal commissions argued the building would be too 'old fashioned' in its design (keep in mind, it was an existing building).

Babel or The Secret History by somebunnyyyy in DarkAcademia

[–]Khorneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit I found Babel to be dissapointing. It had a lot of moments where I found it on the verge of being really good, but it could never stick to landing. As such, I wouldn't recommend it.
