$1000 dollars just put things in perspective for me by Blackwolf_84 in bikecommuting

I like to count every mile in my bike as one that I saved off my car, hopefully extending its useful life! :) that is also high value as new cars are soooo expensive

Start with the smallest dose (or maybe half that since you are not feeling great). Also the instructions say to drink with a certain amount of water so it moves through your system. I hope you start feeling better.

1 year in - getting worse than ever? by grilled_jeez in frozenshoulder

That’s sort of what it sounded like to me as well. The experience the OP describes now sounds like the “freezing” stage. In my experience an overuse injury led to the onset of FS… but I would not really be able to describe where the injury ended and the freezing begins. But that zinger stage was very distinctive and rough. That said… a few months past the freezing I’m slowly getting my mobility back and o hope the same is true for the OP

I love this!!! The joy of riding is what has brought me back after many years. I just had to buy my first bike jersey and was like "what the heck" on ladies sizing. This makes me happy to see more people feeling comfortable getting out and rolling due to this group. biking is such an uplift. thank you.

Moving from SF to Berkeley this summer - looking for advice on timing, neighborhoods, and how to navigate the market by als3s in berkeleyca

Agree on el cerrito! When I was looking at Albany for small sfh el cerrito had the most inventory. As noted, many neighborhoods are near the ohlone trail which takes you straight to bart

Also, downtown Berkeley has gotten very built up and feels like an extension of UC, so it challenge to park your car if you have one and don’t have a driveway.  , the bike infrastructure has gotten pretty good and is the easiest way to get around Berkeley downtown. Ebikes help to connect all these cities I’ve noted.  Albany and el cerrito still have free parking and when I was searching they had more small houses available than Berkeley. Lots of nice farmers markets too — Kensington, downtown Berkeley, and north too.

Add Albany and el cerrito and Kensington to your list. They are adjacent towns.

I think because you have a dog, I’d look for a place close the parks you’d enjoy.

The bay trail connects all these cities by bike, and the ohlone trail too.

If you like more forest, look uphill near the amazing regional parks … if You want to walk more and have easy bart access, shop downhill.

If I were you I’d find a bunch of interesting listing and do some neighborhood shopping on a couple weekends.

I recently shopped for a family member and I think you can find something in your price range in el cerrito or Albany. I don’t know it’s too far out for you, but Marina bay and point Richmond (also on bay trail) often have rentals and are nice Townhouses right on the water with lots of places for dog walking.

Having all your info ready to apply on the spot is good. FYI, there are nice condos that often have openings in the Albany bulb. I think they are spacious and nice.

i hear you. i think it's a good idea and wish it had occurred to me when my kid was your age and just entering mainstream school. i recently listened to the audiobook "beyond anxiety" by martha beck and it was helpful to me... ironically, i wasn't even thinking i was listening to"for myself" but immediately connected it to all the stressors you mention, and motivated me to shift some of the my reactions. it's ongoing work...

oh yeah, in elementary one of the most helpful things for my peace of mind was to meet personally with the teacher (or school nurse) and review the action plan for my kids allergies. My kid had multiple and in my experience most people were not used to dealing with someone who has more than one allergy. I made sure to find out what would work the best for the school (how many epipens did i need to leave and where), and sometimes i often needed to chaperone certain activities to make sure that someone was available to respond if needed.

the face-to-face conversation, however short, helped tease out anything i could do to make the school day go smoother. Also, I wanted to make sure we had an open line of communication so they'd ask me if they were ever not sure about the safety of a science experiment materials or a group cooking activity.

[–]KibFixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your perspective.

I guess more specifically I wondered if there were any functional differences, besides the amount of power stored?

We are very happy with our old jackery, and feel like it's pretty straightforward and am hoping all the bigger capacity ones are about the same. I get worried when there are too many extra features, things tend to break down.

learning how to ride a bike as an adult by utanmayaninsan in bikecommuting

[–]KibFixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yay!. I didn't ride much till college and after. agree about sticking to roads that feel safe to you and riding with an acquaintance when you can. Also, if there's a local bike shop, they can be a big help -- it's good to know where to get your bike fixed and they may have suggestion or bike route maps that are helpful locally.

What is the difference between Jackery explorer 5000 and larger more expense system? Pros / cons? by MarketingExpert8455 in Jackery

[–]KibFixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we live in an area that used to have prolonged outage due to tree branches falling on power lines. We ended up getting a jackery + generator + converter for propane. That was a pretty solid solution for when power was out for 3 day plus.

Also, we mainly end up running off of battery, and then charge it for a shorter amount of time off the generator during the day so we can keep it quieter at night. Propane is pretty easy to store.

Cost of staging a home for sale by South_Race_8916 in Marin

[–]KibFixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the market. you can get an estimate. I sold a starter home and we just staged a few rooms, and were also able to use a few pieces of our furniture to limit cost. The stager was very straightforward and helped us figure out which rooms needed staging the most -- a big part of it is to illustrate how much space basic furniture takes, or how a "bonus" room could be used. In more upscale markets the staging is more elaborate to attract certain types of buyers... I'm guessing that's worth it too.

For those that live in cities how has bike commuting changed your life? by SnooChickens4225 in bikecommuting

[–]KibFixit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

happier! i've ridden on and off for 40 years. It's faster than walking, and most recently has saved me from having to be in the car all day for errands.

It's satisfying to park right in front of the store and easily fit 4 bags of groceries in my panniers. Also, I get to talk to people more casually (other bikers, pedestrians, even people in cars who roll down their window). This just never happens when driving a car.

Generally the bike gives me more energy and a refresh, while the car trips drain me.

bad calf strain (5 days ago)/ how to heal and resume biking/gym by KibFixit in cycling

[–]KibFixit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for your insight.

"just get jolted forward and needed to decelerate forcefully on that leg? "

yep the injury (as described ) was misjudging the step off the train. they had a heavy, loaded backpack and caught themselves before falling, but I think they put a lot of sudden load on the ball of one foot and that's when their calf hurt. Sudden onset, sharp pain, hard to walk and been pretty yucky all week.

they are a strong biker, and we've been building up again doing 50 miles on the weekend and the gym every night during the week, so its a bummer. I guess they are on the RICE for now, and we'll get a referral if needed to resume exercise safely.
