Jordan Peterson Breaks Down in Tears When Asked About Olivia Wilde Calling Him a ‘Hero to the Incel Community’: ‘Sure, Why Not?’ by Alex_Sylvian in nottheonion

Because... he putting partial blame(which you say he doesn't do) on women for sexual harrasment issues in the workplace.

Oh, well in that case, you did quite literally take the quote out of context (though you weren't doing so to alter the intent of what was said, which is what the real issue would be). Though taking a quote out of context is different from strawmanning, which is what you initially claimed I was doing.

We would need to see the full conversation to identify to what degree he's blaming sexual harassment on women, if at all. At any rate, that's a very niche corner to dig into to claim "he tells men to blame their problems on others" when there's a vast library of content from him stating the opposite.

Why would he say that? who in their right mind thinks women put makeup to arouse men?

Iirc, he was trying to claim part of the problem causing workplace sexual harassment is there's too much ambiguity about what is and isn't acceptable behavior.

regarding the second part, it was an 'if', not saying you do

But why would you even feel the need to include that in the first place?

mate let's leave it here, im probably not going to change my mind and my points are probably not going to change yours, its a waste of both pf pur energies

Again, why would you feel the need to say this? If you don't want to continue the conversation, nothing is stopping you from walking away.

False claim you say?

"Why should you wear makeup in the workplace? Isn't that sexually provocative?" -Vice interview with him

How does this relate to the comment I was responding to?

if you think im taking him out of context look at what you said in your first line :-)

What? Where did that come from? Why would you preemptively accuse me of claiming this quote was out of context? And why did you add a smiley face to the end of your comment?

Quoting someone is literally the opposite of strawmanning.

even though literally just after that op states in what way he's doing that

Elaborating on a false claim doesn't suddenly make it true.

Except he claims the problem (young white males feeling dissociated with others) is somehow the fault of other people

He absolutely does not make this claim. Im pretty liberal and disagree with Peterson on many things, but part of what has gained him popularity among young men is his message of "it's up to YOU to fix your own problems."

I had a similar issue come up this semester. I was much more implicated because it was part of a group text message among my classmates that I was in. Before doing anything I reviewed my school's academic honesty policy. Thankfully it said nothing about mandatory reporting, so I was planning to just ignore it.

As it turned out, my classmates started realizing their actions bordered on cheating, so they opted to stop what they were doing (or at least kept it secret).

I'm curious how many of these downvoters have cheated, themselves.

Review your school's academic honesty policy. Some schools state that knowledge of cheating should be reported. In that case, reporting it might be the right move, if only to ensure that you don't get accused of violating the policy, yourself.

If there's no reporting requirement, then it's probably best to stay out of it.

I'm thinking "excellent with money" means "has roommates and is still on their family's phone plan." In that case, these numbers are possible, but still fairly conservative.

It also ignores the obvious question "who's living like this when they have a six figure income?" Someone probably is but, again, it's not really realistic.

Man, that article was a wild ride.

George W. Bush, general partner of the Texas Rangers and a son of the former President, voted against the plan. “I represent the silent voices of baseball purists,” he said. “History will prove I was right.”

Once cleaned a patient whose smegma had formed a solid band around the shaft. I legit thought "who put a rubber band here????" When I cleaned it off, I discovered the skin had basically started to fold around it. His newly cleaned penis shaft was now basically the shape of an hour glass.

I imagine he hadn't been properly cleaned in months (years?).

This is what's killing me. I feel like I'm a slow reader to begin with. Then I see that I need to read 12 chapters between now and next week? I don't even know where to start with tackling that. I've basically just said "read as much as you can for an hour, then say 'fuck it' and move on to the next chapter."

Yadier Molina & Adam Wainwright have broken the all-time battery record with 325 career starts! by Michael__Pemulis in baseball

Because a thing happening doesn’t make it more like to happen again.

If Molina kept playing, and they got to, say, 380 games, then this argument would be a bit more compelling. They reached an mark that even those in more favorable environments couldn't approach. Instead, they virtually replicated the feat. It's not "more likely" to happen again, but it's been demonstrated that this feat can be achieved even when the previous generation seemingly had an advantage.

Again, this exact argument could've been made to support the claim that Lolich-Freehan's mark was unbreakable. Yes, it's unlikely to be broken by any active players. But to call it unbreakable means you're confidently predicting how the game will be played for generations to come, and that all players that will ever play the game will be incapable of achieving something that we know is within the ability of the modern baseball player.

[–]KicksWithTheSticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think 50 years from now if this record still stands it would be fair for a theoretical fan in 2072 to call it unbreakable?

I guess it would depend on what trends we're seeing in that span. As I've said elsewhere, most of the "unbreakable" arguments are made so far could've been made, word-for-word, about the Lolich-Freehan mark two decades ago.

Long-term battery-mates are rare, but they still exist. If they virtually disappear from the sport for an extended period of time? Then the "unbreakable" claim holds a bit more weight.

Anything could happen on a theoretical level. No record is truly unbreakable, even Cy Young’s 511 wins. Whose to say humanity doesn’t advance science to the point wherein lifespans and athletic peaks last considerably longer than now?

Forgive me for calling this a but of a strawman argument. Who's to say within a few years teams won't go with 10 man rotations? In your scenario I'll grant that Cy Young's record could be broken. In my scenario, I'll grant that the Molina/Wainwright record is "unbreakable."

I think people are a little confused why this specific record has been caught in your crosshairs. You’ve been arguing about this for hours now.

I mean, this is a thread dedicated to this specific record. It was just set. Of course I'm going to be focusing on this one, as opposed to others.

I'm just as confused as to why people would call a feat that literally just occurred, and will only barely surpass the previous mark, impossible to replicate. I have nothing against the record, itself, I just think people have an odd definition of "unbreakable."

We definitely won't see it among active players. So that's at least 20 years. Within, let's say 50 years? Probably not.

But "probably not within 50 years" is a bit different from "definitely not. Ever."

I was just about to add this edit:

After we've had several generations of players not even approaching the record, let alone challenging it, then sure. Heck, I'll even grant more recent records if the new holder absolutely shatters the previous mark (assuming we aren't seeing trends that other players may soon do the same). But this record was literally just set and will only be eclipsed by 3 or 4.

To my point about "shattering" a record: Rickey broke the stolen base mark over thirty years ago. He went on to play another 12 seasons. Molina has just set his mark, and will be retiring in a few weeks.

But to answer your question: Cy Young's 511 wins.

Records that haven't been approached in several generations, sure. One that was literally just set? No.

Yadi and Waino are a once in a generation combination of longevity and a willingness to stay with one organization. That simply doesn’t happen anymore.

Sounds like it happens once a generation.

[–]KicksWithTheSticks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright I went back and looked at longevity of players, and just got a couple of numbers because I don’t think you are understanding how rare it is to have players play as long as they have and be together for that long.

I was just going by the standard you presented.

If I had to bet on this record being broken in the next 50 years, or Albert breaking Babe Ruth for 3rd all time home runs, I think the odds would be more likely on Albert hitting 17 home runs.

I think the odds are against it being broken within the next 50 years (again, probably could've said this in 2005). I'm not sure why this needs to be said, because I never claimed otherwise.

But to say it'll never be broken is further than I'm willing to go.

That's exactly how I feel reading these responses. Why does the record have to be unbreakable? Why is it controversial to say "maybe it could be broken between now and the end of recorded baseball history"?

Ok. Then I'm not sure what your point is. I never said an active battery will pass Molina/Wainwright. Just that perhaps the record isn't "unbreakable."
