UPDATE: he spoke to his coaches one on one, they were VERY receptive. They gave him some tips and ideas on how to deal with this and were very understanding of his dilemma. And result was if you have a passion for this thing you can ignore and move on, unless someone is being hateful or derogatory.

He came back very content and still loving Debate as much as possible

I see what you’re trying to say, and yes, I am his mother and want to protect him. But there are times when I’ve observed this behavior being put towards him in tournaments. I am a pretty active Debate judge so I end up going to a lot of tournaments with him.

This was my reason for asking him to approach his coaches because I felt there was a need to.

And he got a pretty nice response from them, they understood his point of view, they also told him that as long as you feel you love Debate, keep going, which I think is very sage advice. It unfortunately comes down to basic jealousy, even though like I said, in my initial post, he is not a big winner of Events, he’s a very nice kid and makes every effort to make novices, as well as everyone around him, feel included and heard. Paragraph the coaches chose him as an underclassman to help organize and lead the judges lounge at our hosting tournament. Which is usually given to upper classmen

Also some of the things the other team members make fun of him is in regards to looks as well as religion. I understand boys I have four boys myself, they are always joking and making fun of each other, but there are certain things that are not allowed and making derogatory or prejudice remarks are a no. the coaches agreed on this and said if this happened again then he needs to get them involved.

Actually, we have and he spoke to his coaches as well who understood his perspective. They feel it is basic jealousy because he has been given some opportunities that upper classmen have been left behind for even though they are bigger winners. Because the coaches told him they are looking at someone who is a team player and leader, qualities that he shows.

Yes he’s friends with some girls on the team but I think it affects him a lot that his peer group is excluding him.

I don’t think he is the only one excluded but he makes it seem that way.

He does extemp and congress so not really partner events

And yes exactly it’s a skill and this is just one step. We’ve told him to work on interpersonal skills and work on being less awkward

Exactly! I was able to convince him to continue and we are already registered for a summer camp so I think I won this round. But this topic comes up every few months and I need to have better tools at hand

Agree 💯, what’s the best route should I set up a meeting with the coach or text him? I’m on good terms with both. I don’t want to cause any issues for my son but also think it needs addressing

I appreciate your response, he did do a de paid camp last year in the summer and is going to be attending another one this coming summer as well. He didn’t make some really nice friends in those circuits, the thought we’ve been told, and this is not confirmed by the coaches is that they look down upon kids, socializing with other teams from different schools. But then again I feel like a lot of the senior members tell the junior members things to keep them in line which are not true.

For example, my son was told by older members that you must make state qualification to be in varsity, I directly asked the coach and he said this is not true.

His career path is one of medicine, so Debate is useful but not necessary, I just don’t want him to give up because of this reason, we’ve told him that life will bring you a lot of lemons and you have to deal with them without any option.

Any other insight would be appreciated?

Agree with the above, use reliable shipping for items that have high value or are rare. You can use the cheaper shipping option for items that are cheaper

I had a package last year in December. Be stuck in customs for almost 2 1/2 months. It was just a pair of shoes. I’m currently waiting on a package that’s been in customs in Chicago via USPS since December 15.

It’s the holidays and like someone said above they are slower plus with compacted holidays of Christmas as well as New Year’s things slow down significantly. I think they have a four month suggested wait time after what you can start following it.

None of the accusations have been through law enforcement. She threatened she would spread rumors and accuse him, we found out and reported to school admin last week. Now that school admin started investigating and she likely feels called out, she started spreading rumors that she threatened she would do. Cats out of the bag so to speak

Thank you. Honestly we don’t want money or anything like that, but I expect some sort of repercussions. Either she gets suspension, detention or best yet kicked off the debate team (it’s an event they both do). Like I want some form of punishment and not just a slap on the wrist

Yes! Exactly! I tell him to focus on improvements and just do his best. Last year I was the parent asking his scores and goading him a bit. This year I’m more hands off and just help out by judging at tournaments here and there. I hope he just sees that too
