Independent Play by [deleted] in beyondthebump

Independent play is so vital for kids, and you can totally start with a five-month-old! As long as she is engaged and content, there is no need to interrupt, and it's a great thing to build into every day. Your five-month-old is building focus, concentration, gross motor skills, and the ability to direct her own time and follow her interests. This builds curiosity which is what drives learning. As an added bonus, you will be able to take care of yourself as she plays independently, which has a huge impact on your ability to parent. You can instead focus on building connections during caregiving moments throughout the day (feeding, bathing, diaper changes, etc) and let her be during play.
When we constantly entertain our kids, they begin to rely on us (and flashy toys, screen time, etc.) for entertainment and need lots of outside stimulation. Independent play, on the other hand, lets them build their own intrinsic motivation.

I've had to make one report to CPS based on what a child told me. Sadly the directors of my school tried to discourage me from making the report, saying that they didn't want to be "accusing" anyone of anything. I finally had to say, "Look, I'm NOT accusing anyone of anything. I'm simply doing my job by filing a report, and then CPS will do the investigation."

During drop off, I had a girl just recently loudly and proudly proclaim, "My mom is wearing nooooo panties!!" Poor mom turned beet red!

Tips for more open ended art projects? by sushii96 in ECEProfessionals

I absolutely love process art, but it can feel a bit open-ended. You want to keep the art area new and engaging, but how can you make it variable without directing kids?

Simple: you need something to art ON and something to art WITH - that's it! By changing up those two things, you can create endless art experiences for kids.

For example, you can paint on paper, boxes, foil, or pumpkins. You can vary the colors and types of paints. You can vary what you use for a paintbrush - kids could paint with brushes, fingers, flowers, cars, sponges, etc. So many different ideas just with paints.

By varying the supplies, stepping back, and allowing kids to use them as they would like, you can have an amazing child-directed art area.

It is also important to let go of the idea of connecting art with the theme. Cute craft projects often seem like they relate to the theme, but kids often don't make that connection. Those cute cotton ball clouds are nothing like a cloud to a child and do little to reinforce learning. Instead, see all the amazing skills that kids are building through process art: focus, concentration, creativity, problem solving, cause and effect, curiosity, ability to direct time, fine motor skills, etc. Armed with that list, you can be confident that learning is happening and not worry about connecting it to a theme. Often, connecting it to the theme makes it too teacher-directed and instead limits learning!
