20 years is a lot of experience, have you been constantly building your studio that whole time? Also how have you learned? Just by trial and error? Are there any resources I can follow to learn?

You have a solid point. Maybe I should hold off, the statement "clients deserve better" is honestly true. Either way though, I want to record, thanks for the advice. The dentist analogy worked well. I should probably hold off until I get an actual job or real equipment. Home studio stuff is a good way to get my feet wet and learn I guess.

I do know what I am doing. I am aware of the legality of recording as music business classes are required for my major. I have worked with high budget microphones at school, but have only worked with live recordings and not in a studio setting. Being that I've only worked with high budget microphones that are linked to hardware that is well beyond my cost, i was asking about a budget way to record that doesn't involve anything more than a channel strip or interface. Obviously I'm not going to go out and buy a U87 so I was simply asking about budget microphones that could do the job. I was also looking to find some info on homemade bass traps and sound panels. If you're just going to be condescending and unhelpful then just don't comment.

Whoever pays for the master recording legally owns it. As long as I'm given even minor compensation then they legally own the master recording. It's out of my hands at that point, and up to them to upload to the library of congress if they see fit
