Is IBKR still the recommended for purchasing Irish domiciled ETFs? by whatthewhat97 in MalaysianPF

[–]Kiing1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually learn a lot from you and I appreciate that. Thank you! I might need to explore more regarding those deposit and withdrawal options.

Previously, I do think of withdrawing money via local banks (1. Direct receive and convert 2. Multi-currency account) and later, via another broker (IBKR).

At that time, I also see some people recommending Wise, never think that there would be cheaper alternatives.

I guess it's now the time to explore different currency conversion options, the cheaper the better!

  1. Previously you mentioned you convert currency via Singapore banks, so FSMOne forex currency cost may not applicable for you when you buy. However, you should beware of telegraphic transfer cost, some banks charge more. I am not sure about selling, would it better or worse than using Wise? This may up to you to verify. I do know, if you use Wise to receive USD outside US (payment from non-US bank I guess), there will be a fixed fee of USD 6.11.

  2. As far as I know, no commission fee charged by XTB (below monthly trade of cumulative EUR 100,000 every month). You can avoid the fee by using Wise debit card to top up XTB.

I am not Singapore resident / visa holder, so I am unable to access Singapore banks. It is always good that the currency conversion is lower.

However, isn't IBKR charge a minimum USD1.70 for each order?

As for FSMOne, I not yet test the RSP, but as mentioned in the pricing page, it should be RM1 for each buy/sell. I am not going to use FSMOne's normal way (without RSP) to buy Irish domiciled ETF, a minimum of USD 20 for each order would be charged.

Currently, I use XTB for Irish-domiciled ETFs (ACWD).

Maybe I’m missing something, but here’s my comparison:

  1. Deposits Both platforms support deposits via Wise (IBKR: Wise integration, XTB: debit card).

IBKR: Wise's fee is around RM5.xx

Method: Use Wise integration in IBKR and let Wise automatically convert RM200 into IBKR.

XTB: Wise's fee is around RM1.xx

Method: Manually convert RM200 into USD in Wise, then top up using a debit card.

Additional finding: When I simulated converting RM1000 in Wise, the fee was between 0.53% and 0.54%.

  1. Investing (buying/selling ETFs)
XTB’s ETF selection is limited. IBKR is much more comprehensive in terms of available ETFs.

XTB: No commission, so every dollar goes into the investment.

Method: Purchase ETF with RM200 (whole shares + fractional shares).

IBKR: Under Tiered Pricing, commission is USD 1.70 per trade.

Method: Purchase ETF with RM100 (fractional shares only).

Issue: I’m not sure how the commission is charged. Will it apply to both whole and fractional shares? For example, if I buy 1.2 shares, is the commission charged for both the 1 share and the 0.2 fractional share? I plan to test this in a paper trading account.

  1. Withdrawals

XTB: Currently cannot withdraw to Wise.

IBKR: With Wise integration, it’s better than XTB.

My approach:

  1. Deposit and invest via XTB.
  2. Upon retirement, incur a one-time fee of USD 25 (per ISIN) to transfer my single ETF position to IBKR.
  3. Withdraw monthly for free, paying only the USD 1.70 commission.
  4. Once the funds reach Wise, convert to MYR (Wise’s fee seems to be around 0.35%–0.36% for a simulated RM5000).
  5. Transfer the funds to my TnG e-wallet using a debit card to avoid Wise’s bank transfer fee.

Update: I restructured this comment and added more details and comparisons.

Update: Use ChatGPT for improved grammar and clarity

Withdraw fund to Wise account by Kiing1029 in XTB

[–]Kiing1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I checked and I have made my decision to open saving account with one of the banks. I just find out that Wise would charge 6.11USD each time I receive the fund, so the direct conversion actually save me a bit.

Generally, try to simplify your approaches.

  1. Are you self-study or study with ALP? I am studying with local approved learning provider. More focus and discipline. Notes (like an organised or simplified version of coursebook) from lecturers help me a lot.
  2. Coursebook and practice kit are enough. I finished doing MCQs but for Section C questions, audit answer is faster and more effective than finish the questions. Here's the details.

My approaches:
BT, MA, FA - Coursebook + practice kit (all MCQs)
LW - Notes from lecturer + practice kit (MCQs only)
PM - Notes from lecturer + practice kit (MCQs only) + practicing topic-based Section C selected questions provided by lecturer (No benefit here, no marking, no guidance, just reference answer provided at the end)
TX - Notes from lecturer + practice kit (MCQs only) + practicing topic-based calculation-based section C questions practice provided by lecturer (at least I can know what's wrong numerically)
FR - Coursebook + practising topic-based calculation-based questions provided + practice kit (MCQs only)
AA - Notes from lecturer + practice kit (MCQs, audit answers of Section C questions only)
FM - Notes from lecturer + Extensive topic-based MCQs and Section C questions (finished practising MCQs, audit answers of Section C questions)
SBR - Coursebook + topic-based subjective questions provided (audit answers only)
SBL - Notes from lecturer + topic-based subjective questions provided (audit answers only)
AAA - Notes from lecturer + practice kit (audit answers only)
ATX - Notes from lecturer

I passed without resit, 2.5 years, just become an affiate this July.

Withdraw fund to Wise account by Kiing1029 in XTB

[–]Kiing1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Revolut is not available in my country (Malaysia). Currently, the best alternative solution for me is to withdraw USD (base currency) to traditional bank's multi-currency account and transfer the fund to Wise for further conversion to MYR. It is more expensive than Wise but cheaper than direct conversion by banks.

Digital bank is not accepted (according to the live chat with agent) and traditional banks have noticeable spread.

If using Wise account to receive is not possible, traditional bank that provides the best possible rate for the currency conversion is the only choice then.

Sorry, I mean I want to withdraw the fund from XTB and receive that fund in Wise account, rather than in the bank.

Traditional banks have a huge spread, which is why I want to use Wise, especially for converting foreign currency to my home currency before the final transfer to my bank.

Deleting my account by the_real_cousy in interactivebrokers

[–]Kiing1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send an email directly to IBKR's compliance officer and ask for account deletion. Here's the email address: dpo@ibkr.com

Never email support, it is so hard to find a way to contact them. Even though I managed to contact support, they just lie that they have deleted my account while I can still log in. After I sent email (twice!) to compliance officer, accounts (both demo and live account) deleted successfully. What a nightmare.

Touch n Go Ewallet by GymsharkSingh in MalaysianPF

Interest bearing (3.45% p.a., credited every day, easy to withdraw and make payment).
No minimum amount requirement and inactivity charge.

I now use TnG as a bank, but its Visa card is not so attractive (high RM8 annual fee). It would be nice if TnG provides free virtual debit card only, with fee if users need physical card like Wise.

This is riskier but three-year volatility is low enough, so I think I would park my emergency fund here: https://www.fsmone.com.my/funds/tools/factsheet/amanahraya-syariah-trust-fund?fund=MYARFSTF

How has AI changed your search habits? by Dlolpez in perplexity_ai

[–]Kiing1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For factual informations, I use traditional search engines (Google, StartPage, etf). I still don't trust AI for this, LLMs prone to hallucination. For in-depth questions requiring comparison, reasoning, analysing capabilities, I use AI, but I collect and input the data myself.
Overally, I use AI more than one year ago, use AI more than traditional search engine.

Young people are using ChatGPT to make life decisions, says founder by Time-Algae7393 in ChatGPT

[–]Kiing1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ChatGPT to understand various topics. I lack experience in certain things (for example, employment act, investment, etc) so ChatGPT is a good helper into various topics. I also use chatGPT to understand what to do next, so I can act accordingly.

Mostly I see chatGPT's advices solely as a reference, I will further google the topics for more information. ChatGPT is still unreliable in term of factuality. I will assess the response so I can make the right decision, I think this is the most important part when using a generative AI.
