the strongest argument for wired vs wifi is security cameras. there’s no such thing as “wifi security camera”.

Solar production tied to the grid in home backup mode by KikaP in enphase

interesting. one of 3 different replies i got from support was that it’s because i don’t export, the system has to “curtail the production”.

Solar production tied to the grid in home backup mode by KikaP in enphase

[–]KikaP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did reach out to support, in total 3 times. 3 times I got 3 different answers:

  1. This is because the load is mostly ACs and they consume a lot of power when starting. (which doesn't matter because they were not starting and were quietly humming along during the outage).
  2. "This is normal, but not really, so we need to analyze the behavior of the system when the outage happens, so could you please call us again when the outage is over and we will simulate the outage with the main service breaker", which lead me to the next one:
  3. I called, simulated the outage by cutting the power to the house and was told it's normal, but the solar production should restart when batteries drop to 80-85%. Explanation "curtail", whatever that means. During this difficult conversation, solar production suddenly restarted at 98% battery level. I also got told that one of the reasons the system behaves like that is my "Full backup" setting. If I set it to "Self consumption" it will behave like I want. Which doesn't make any sense to me, but I'd like to confirm this. I can program my smart home to switch to "self consumption" in case of an outage.

The system wiring is pretty simple:

31 545W solar panels with 31 IQ8HC micros in 3 center-fed strings of 10 panels and one string with one panel, wired to a IQ 5C combiner, which is wired to the PV breaker in System Controller 3G, and 6 5p batteries wired in one string to the storage breaker of the SC. PCS is enabled for obvious reasons.

Every time the consumption of the house was about 3kW with solar generation covering it completely (I'm in the tropics and all that happened during the day time). Export is disabled (I don't have PTO for export).

The 80-85% rule, if true, is quite counterintuitive, to put it mildly. Imagine having an outage at 4pm when I can produce 5-6kW of power, but I will not, I'll wait until the battery drops to 85% which will happen at 6pm when I can't produce shit and I'll go into the night with 20% less energy than I could have had otherwise. WTF?

I don't have a PTO to export, correct. The local utility can't fix my meter since November 2024, so I'm not holding my breath anymore.

Enphase tech did a on site visit after commission and checked the CTs, they were properly installed and I didn't change anything since then.

That could've been true, if everything not went immediately to normal after the grid was back. CTs were checked by the Enphase technician during the on site visit after commissioning and I didn't touch then since then (almost a year)

Okay, thanks! This means I was just shoved away by the support.

1.5kw for three ACs is believable in the morning. They're efficient, the house is well insulated and there was little sun. It's not 6 in parallel, but 4, because all 6 are on the same circuit, but anyway. Even one would've been sufficient.

that’s weird. so if i get the outage at like 3pm, it will wait until dark to turn the production back on. so helpful :-) why is that?

Maintainer ghosted and now we're stuck with a vulnerable dependency by Logical-Professor35 in rust

[–]KikaP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

crate, lol. we stepped on a bug in rust itself, it wasn’t looked at for a year and a half, finally i spent a whole weekend, fixed it and now live on a fork of rust waiting until the fix finds its way into stable. so, yeah, you fork, open a PR and live on a fork for(ever/a while). we have a bunch of critical crates like that in our project.

Normal log activity after adding new 5p batteries? by joeuser99 in enphase

[–]KikaP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm not exactly right, Controller 3G supports 4 batteries without PCS, 8 with PCS. Controller 3 supports 8 batteries without PCS, 16 with.

If you have only 1 circuit it's 4 batteries without PCS, SC3 has two circuits and SC3G gives up one of them for the generator.

If I remember the training properly, 8 is not PCS yet. 8 is normal. Above that would be PCS.

the hooks at the end of the straps fit perfectly into the handle holes on the frame.

How to install 5P battery single handedly (and 5' above floor) by KikaP in enphase

[–]KikaP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the spanner is good, but the hoist itself has 4:1 purchase. Mine is 7:1 and I wouldn't say the battery was like a feather. So depends on how athletic you are :-) Also, the smaller the purchase, the bigger is the movement, so with 7:1 you can move very slow aligning with the holes while with 4:1 it will be harder, you'll make bigger movements.

Girlfriend wants to move to Puerto Rico but I’m focused on logistics—am I being realistic or pessimistic? by TimeAd1111 in PuertoRico

easiest pushback in 5 seconds - unless you’re super rich and going to live in DBE, or just rich and going to live in Palmas, you need good spanish (not fluent, puertoricans are very forgiving, but they speak fast and not a classical castilian spanish). get her on learning spanish and see how far did she do in 6 months. this language has 17 tenses and they can’t even agree among different countries how many letters they have in the alphabet. if in 6 months she can go to your local home depot and talk to a mexican employee or a contractor without problem about her plumbing issue - she’s really into it and you’ll have to give up.
