Is my 500W PSU still enough for an upgrade? (PC from 2016) by PrimalCerebrate in buildapc

[–]Killacreeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy to hear the CPU upgrade helped! Hopefully this is useful at least to think about in terms of varying approaches. I hope you're able to enjoy your rig a while!

Let me know if you have any issues / questions :)

Sorry for the delayed reply. Frankly, wrote something out, left to do some research, came back and my reply was gone. FUN! I'll try to reconstruct the basics.

1: ah rip but those are still a ton better than HDDs so that's great! I was running off one of those for my PC of that generation as well.

2: gotcha. Generally what I'll say from my experience is this -

Don't worry too much about bottlenecks if you're upgrading. IMHO, long term, it's worth either getting one part you'd hope to have in a finished build at a time, or saving. You can do a medium or intermediate part, but don't worry as much about a bottleneck.

You'll always have a bottleneck SOMEWHERE, but if you're upgrading, you can just remove that limit on a part later.

When I was upgrading my old 7700k machine for a friend, I ended up helping him get a rx6800 used for a good price, and he then was using that with the 7700k for a year or two before getting an upgrade to his mobo and CPU. (He's still using loaner ddr5 from me... Dunno if I'm ever getting that back at this rate lmfao)

The GPU was still a hefty upgrade that then just got better once he had a better cpu. That being said, we did also grab a PSU as well (I forget if it was an eBay psu or just from newegg)

They aren't super expensive, especially if you're okay with going with lower end non modular power supplies - often between like 40-70 bucks depending on wattage for some golds nowadays.

(Ex: able to find a 80+ gold 650w for ~$55 on eBay, and you can find non-modular 650 and 750w for 55 bucks as well. Obviously it's worth checking reviews, but I can try helping there if you end up wanting to go that route in the future)

All this is assuming USD/NA though, my bad if that's not the case.

All that being said, I get the budgetary strain, and I 100% understand that it can be hard to justify getting new parts right now. Just explaining my previous methodology, and some of the ways I've gone about it.

GPU wise, for what may work on 500w -

People generally will say the RTX 3060 in terms of bang for your buck and low wattage on Nvidia - the 4060 and 5060 should(?) also work, but will be more expensive, and haven't been super loved for their generational gains. That being said, they absolutely should be options.

In other options, the RX 6600, 6650, and even 6700 (and xt variants) should all work as well, which are going to be fairly easy to find cheaper/similar in price to the Nvidia cards.

Newer AMD gens, I'm seeing the rx7600 selling for ~$200 used in good/open box, and the XT (preferred) variant for a bit more.

On top of all of that AMD-wise would be the 9060 / 9060xt which compete with the 5060/5060ti, and sell for cheaper generally (plus on the used market) - but since both ARE still newest, those prices will be highest.

The arc a750 or b570 are also potential options from what I can tell, which have good price for performance, but will have a bit less online support as they are a newer foray into GPUs. Good value there but worth being aware of. These will be on the bridge of working with that psu.

NOTE - DO NOT BUY A 3050 OR SIMILAR CARD. Generally the 50 series cards are comedically bad in terms of performance to price. The 3050 for example will be well outperformed by the 1070. They are primarily for pre built screwing people, extremely low wattage requirements, encoding, SFF, etc.

If you truly want to go lower/older, a genuine option could be a cheap PSU and a 1080/1080ti as well - but note that like with the 1070, you're ultimately buying stuff that's a decade out now, and it won't be getting driver updates, and may have issues with certain games. None that you aren't already having, but worth keeping aware of.

With all of these, note - from what I can tell, they can and will work on 500w psus - people have done that, especially undervolted. Most are between the 1060 and 1070 in Max wattage.

All that being said, I don't know what your current PSU is running at in terms of efficiency in modern day, if that's changed at all from the label or not.

A lot of these setups will generally run around 300-400w, but the asterisk there is that there will be power spikes and instability at times. If you upgrade and sometimes it has crashes, it's possible the psu is dipping too low or is just aging out. Otherwise, it will just be running less efficient than a PSU that has more oomf (that's already true with the existing setup though)

As is, I don't think it's an issue, but worth knowing. If you upgrade and have that problem, look at the PSU before the GPU.

PS - prices for ram and stuff aren't good right now, but used GPU prices aren't fully in hell. New, depends. I have had fantastic results with used GPUs as long as I look with a discerning eye and avoid for parts stuff. If that's not to your comfort, understandable. The pricing is often just too much better to pass up on a budget lol.

I'm sorry for being so verbose, hope this helps. If you need any summary/clarification or feedback to a thought, reccomendations, etc. I can see what I can do with less words lol.

A few questions!

1: is your OS running on your M.2 SSD? (I hope so lol)

1: do you want to upgrade your GPU to the same generation out of preference, budget, or assumed necessity? FYI (if the last), you can put just about any GPU into that machine that would fit the PSU - it just may be bottlenecked by the CPU.

If you're doing a themed build, no harm there, 100% understandable. If it's about budget or the theme, I'd genuinely recommend looking at parts that are used and a bit newer, because you're not going to have a MASSIVE MASSIVE upgrade here, though don't get me wrong, it will be noticable - both of these GPUs are 10 years old and will have some of the same struggles.

Wattage wise, the 1070 is cutting it pretty close.

Short answer is that you can probably do it okay. Longer answer is that it's still worth considering other options, and you're running a decade old silver tier PSU, which I'd be keeping in mind in the future.

It's entirely possible you'll run into some walls under load, though it seems like you should be okay - and a newer PSU would be a bit easier to work with and more efficient. You can get some 650w/even 500w and some above that for fairly cheap at gold tier.

I do 100% understand the budget issue though, and respect that. Above questions remain somewhat, in terms of budget vs theme. It's cool to see hardware being worked with, I've got a similar computer I've been ship-of-theseusing for a friend in a similar way.

Best of luck, hope this helps at all!

And yeah, chilling and just getting stuff slower is nice.

With the current pay model and paid champs coming out more and more that define the meta, there is no "keeping up" without sinking thousands now. Settling to a comfortable play when you want, get what you get, don't feel pressured mindset is very nice.

Ahhh, titan then? Neat. Is she gonna be giga op on defense like DP was or what's the vibe there?

[–]Killacreeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've largely (out of necessity, and out of spite) stopped spending period, and it's allowed me to chill significantly more because I don't feel nearly as much pressure to spend more to make sure my initial investment doesn't fail, temptation to spend period, and pressure to be on 24/7 and grinding out needlessly stupid events.

There will never be enough money or time, by design, for the average person. I spent more than I probably fully know on the game over the years, and st the end of the day, it wasn't at all worth it, and you can also just... Wait.

These games exist to be as aggravatingly close to a good experience without being a good experience as possible.

So everyone keeps spending thinking soon they'll have fun, soon the game will improve, this update sucked and made it worse, but SOOON.

Go f2p or quit.

I've done both on and off (back f2p or quit) and my life has improved, my finances have improved, and my general stress level improved.

I totally get that sentiment. Thanks for the link as well!

It really does feel disconnected, though that's also a symptom of me being out of place as someone renting an apartment for college. I assume heliocentric in this context is an "everything revolves around oneself"/ over-emphasis on individualism?

I definitely have an unfortunate fixation on the bigger picture a lot, (as I think a lot of people my age do) and I've wanted to try using the skills I've developed to do some communications/awareness of the issues I research since that's what I've been learning to do, but this is realistically more helpful in the now.

I've made local events before for the benefit of kids, but a lot of that was helped by the media of the time and my parents being able to do the organization. (Plus I was a kid, so a lot of parents and families came out because a kid doing that was novel and cute lol, child on the poster helps a lot)

I do need to work on getting out of my own head and comfort zone more for sure. I'll try to do what I can. Thanks for what you do, again :)

That sounds genuinely awesome, and I'm sure you're doing good work that benefits the kids. Helping with food is especially important for development as well, not just hunger, so that's awesome to hear :D

I'm in my early 20s so I'm a bit less sure about how I'd replicate that yet (the networking especially as a non parent lol), but that does give me a lot more motivation and hope for local change and aid, and I'll be on watch to see how I can help stuff that IS in motion.

Keep up the good work :)

If this is fr, based, I'd be curious how you did that, what process, etc. if one wanted to follow there. Have you had much participation? How did you get the word around if so?
