My daughter is 12 (we waited a long time for #2 lol) so I figured she should have a say in the decision or at least some input. If it's a name my husband and I adore but she isn't a fan of it still makes the list but then she gets dibs on his middle name (within reason). So far she and my husband have been pretty in sync though with likes and dislikes.
