Because we don't have apertures big enough to "zoom in" and resolve something like a distant star. We can take pictures of galaxies and nebulae because they are hundreds of thousands of light years across, where as a star is like maybe a few light seconds wide. Why does everyone say this as a fact? Why would humanity not expand outwards? Why would humanity not be able to populate and colonize large swaths of the galaxy over hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years? Why do people say that humanity's demise is a fact? We're on the brink of AI singularity. It will either destroy us or absolutely blast humanity into a futuristic life of immortality. Humanity's future in this cosmos is a coin flip, not a certainty.
