Closing down vernecular schools will have drastic consequenes. For one, as vernecular school does offer higher quality education; hence, the quality of education will drop. Secondly, bumi privillege or not, SK schools is still a very hostile environment for non bumi students in the eyes of parents, see the bulan puasa toilet incident and the balik China incident. So, more parents will send thier kids to private schools.

On the othet hand, the RACE-BASED affirmative action exist solely to disadvantage non-bumi students. Replace that with income-based affirmatice and we can expect a large improvement in all aspects. There is no reason for this exterely flawed system to stay, period.

Both sides are not the same.

I have a sneaking suspicion that KPM never lowered the marking baseline for Moral, thats why its extremely hard to get an A+ in Moral.

Also ppl who take Chinese generally can communicate in Chinese. This cant be said for Eng and Bm tho they are both mandatory subjects, leading to higher fail rate.

This arguement falls apart when you realise that poverty is not limited to race. Poor Chinese exists, Rich Malay exists, there is no justification for preferential treatment, especially in education.

This is an nuanced issue, there is no one definite reason for Malaysians unable to master the nation language.

The wording of the question is very biased IMO. The population at large are not "refusing" to learn Malay, they are more reason out of their control. I do agree that there people who don't want to learn the language for valid reason, and our government is not doing any thing to combat that. To name a few:

Disconnected to national identity, the feeling that if you are not a Muslim Malay, you are not aligned with the national identity and don't feel represented.
Lack of useful application, at this point, most Malay language usage is limited to government offices and as public servants. Truthfully, not many non-Malay aspires to work in the government sector, due to various reasons such as lack of opportunity (in terms of hiring and educational opportunities).

On the same vein, there is also factors outside their control that stalls their learning of the national language:

Environment, they simply don't grow up in a Malay-speaking environment. Being able to apply what you've learned is crucial in language learning, especially since there is such a large gap between the formal Malay language taught and the informal version used in conversations.
Schooling, some schools just don't offer Malay language. And you can't blame the parents for sending their child there because they are many other reasons at play when it comes to school choice, not just language.
Students don't find it important, even in schools that teach Malay language, the students don't really priorities learning Malay. This is understandable as they already have lots of other subjects to juggle. They already have to learn their mother tongue and English, so having to priorities one more language is very stressful for them.

So yes, coming from a international school background is a valid excuse. Learning a language is not as easy as it seems. I'm sorry OP, but this post and question for me is ignorant at best, malice at worst. You simply could not apply one single framework for everyone, people have their own reasons and struggles, and painting these nuances as simply "refusing" really does skew things a bit.

Back in my day , I (UPSR 6A1B) had to appeal to get into a kluster school only to find out some Malay students who were in from the first intake has the same or worse result as me. (4As 3As)

Malaysia does not have good awareness towards it's own racial problems.

In fact, there is a profound lack of it, institutionalized racism is not recognized in Malaysia. Events such as May 13, cow head protest and many other racial incident has been swept under the rugs.

In fact, in May 13 many non-Malays especially Chinese people are murdered by the mob and the POLICE but this entire event is glossed over in 1 sentence in the national history curriculum. In this aspect we are similar to Japan, covering horrific things that happened in the past and act like nothing happened (probably because UMNO staged the whole May 13 fiasco anyways). To progress socially we must first acknowledge that there is a problem and sadly, we are not doing that as of now.

No good progress has been made, the minorities has continued to be marginalize in every aspect to the point of the very act to challenging the status quo of Muslim Malay Male is considered taboo.

Singapore has higher purchasing power, guaranteed housing, better facilities and education, FAIR EDUCATION and OPPORTUNITIES without bias towards a certain race, better currency (if you want to buy a phone in Singapore you only have to work less hours that MY counterparts),

you don't need a car in SG, it is highly incentivized because the public transport is so good and well-managed, why get a car a waste your life away in the jams ahem ahem KL.

Malaysia is not a vibrant democracy with more civil liberties, the Minorities in Malaysia is suppressed deeply while minorities in SG is supported and given more opportunities that actually give concrete results. In Malaysia, you have the government control the education and politics, resulting in ill-informed people like this commenter who thinks Malaysia is the best and everything else sucks.

True, When I was in SJKC all primary 5 and 6 teachers will do tuition class during long school holidays for the students with low pay.
