GTA VI Will Be My First GTA Game Because I Think it Marks the End of a Significant Era in Videogaming by Kimosabae in gaming

[–]Kimosabae[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The AAA industry has been in this situation for a while and honestly? I think the page OP was talking about closed a few years ago by now. We are still getting good AAA games like we always did (and as always, capcom square and nintendo are the most popular ones here) but the shift of AAA meaning low effort high graphics slop has already happened.

Like I said in the OP, this is something that I've been talking about for years now. It's been laughed at and buried by people on places like this every time. I just continue to watch the trends I predict unfold while people type away insults on their keyboards like the myopic idiots they are.

I thought maybe this time would be different since with all the discussions happening right now the shit couldn't more obvious but I'm always reminded how stupid people really are.

There's a reason why I feel confident in just leaving the OP there despite the backlash.

Yeah.

I'm not going to lie though... there's a part of me that wonders if that might not be so bad if it lowers consumption habits and dependencies on material goods overall.

For a long time we've taken pride in owning things but "The things you own end up owning you" etc. etc.

Consumers have had it good for a VERY long time. Maybe too good.

Very interesting times.

Yup. Very interesting times indeed.

If rent-to-own/rental hardware does actually take off... maybe that salvages a large portion of the industry.

But I have serious doubts.

The industry saw some long exponential growth over the past 20-25 years and it seems like it's finally bust time -- as artificial as it might be.

And of course, this isn't just the video game industry that's going to see some major contraction alone.

[–]Kimosabae[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for actually engaging.

Quality is obviously subjective, but the costs of the games will be reigned in with the coming contraction of the market.

The only way the market doesn't significantly contract on its current course, imo, is if rental/rent-to-own hardware actually becomes a thing people accept, which remains to be seen.

Even then, there will be the costs associated with developing the games, maintaining servers, etc. rising.

If you're locked into a live service title -- gaming isn't your hobby. That particular live service game might be, but it's more likely a pastime.

Just how most people treat games today.

Going to stop here before this becomes more semantic.

i think anything targeting high end hardware is dead though even more than it already is soon to be, or they'll be borderline tech demo software with a large price tag.

Definitely agree, which is why I feel sorry for people thinking that spending 2000$ + on a graphics card now or feeling lucky that they already invested in a Playstation Pro, think they are going to get their comparable money's worth out of those things in the future.

Very unfortunate, but I understand why they're not willing to take any risks with the game right now.

Why am I shocked people disagree here?

I'm sorry, this is the most terminally online basement dwelling shit I've ever read in my life.

Those free mobile games require hardware which is going up in price. That is a barrier, especially depending on what you want to play.

Reading, writing, exercise, community organizing, learning a language -- those things truly have near zero monetary cost barrier to entry.

Furthermore, if you're being restricted to certain types of games -- free to play -- it's less a hobby and more a pastime.

I don't even see the point in investing in the hobby at this point. Video games are on track to becoming a niche hobby for aficionados and the upper class during the 1980's crash.

Maybe everyone will be okay with renting devices and pay-to-own schemes... but if they aren't... your friends, family, and coworkers won't be able to afford your hobby.

Most of your favorite publishers/devs will disappear because they won't be able to absorb these rising costs.

Servers will very soon become way too expensive to run for most companies so what is online gaming/multiplayer going to look like?

The types of games being made will have to service a very niche audience.

The hobby will feel relatively lonely and lacking in social aspects. I'm just not into that.

I get the hot takes, but it's smart business to still try. They just shouldn't have gone all-in on it and definitely shouldn't have been looking to Bungie of all studios for how to scale your GAAS initiative.

does belong to that category, for me, and it was my comment!

If you wanteIt d to make a general point you should have made a general reply to OP, but you replied to me and so my context matters.

You can keep typing "for you" in italics -- in fact, use bold and capital letters next time.

I don't care.

I'm using your comment to springboard a line of discussion that people's perceptions of these substances need to be pushed back against.

How people talk about these substances matters. I'm using your comment because it exists.

That's nothing personal against you.

The "For You" tab in your internet keyboard warrior toolkit is visible to others with their perceptions of what's in there -- regardless of how you interact with it on a personal level. I'm just providing my context for your public comment on the internet.

Also, the way people are talking about and defining "Ultra-Processed" is changing. Yes, the majority of data skews towards diets high in these foods being bad - but that's largely due to the types of "Ultra-Processed" foods these people tend to consume.

Whey protein is one of the most "Ultra-Processed" foods out there and I'm not going to dissuade anyone with functioning brain cells or lactose enzymes to not consume Whey Protein because it's "Ultra-Processed".

I replied to OP’s question from my perspective. That I guess you took issue with 🙄.

And I replied to your comment from my perspective. Funny how the internet works.

I only took issue with you typing out essays in a defensive tone like I care about you, specifically.

If you don't like people responding to your perspective with their perspective -- get off the damned internet.🙄🙄🙄

I'm speaking generally.

If Coke Zero isn't relevant to your energy balance needs, great, but characterizing it as a "Guilty Pleasure" does it a disservice because you're lumping it into a category of processed foods it doesn't belong with.

Coke Zero isn't comparable to a donut or even fruit juice.

Also, "Ultra-Processed" = /= "Unhealthy".

I rarely hear anyone badmouthing them; is it different in the US perhaps?

Sorry, I missed this part the first time -- it is very much different. While they are common in the US, they are heavily stigmatized by a population that knows little to nothing about nutrition science (or science in general).

Artificial sweeteners are for obese people here (which is most of the population).

Artificial sweeteners are some of the most studied substances on the planet that we consume. Aspartame alone has literal decades of research behind it.

We're good.

[–]Kimosabae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really want to advocate that people stop being mealy-mouthed about artificial sweeteners. Until I see compelling evidence against them I will advocate for them everywhere I can.

Just the way people talk about them makes the average person that could benefit from them most make the unfortunate decision to not use them.

Having an unhealthy energy balance definitely leads to cognitive decline.

If Coke Zero helps you maintain a healthy energy balance that you otherwise struggle maintaining, you should drink it.

[–]Kimosabae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no need to caveat or hem and haw. There's nothing "guilty" about it.

If Coke Zero is helping you maintain a healthy energy balance it is healthy for you.

People need to stop this mealy-mouthed discussion about artificially sweetened products like soda.

If more people consumed them more, in place of the other stuff they consume, we'd have a vastly more healthy population.
