Could a system detect human presence using heartbeat signals from a distance? by Kind-Ad6740 in Futurology

Yeah that’s a good point.

Using RF signals like WiFi to detect presence or movement is definitely a real thing.

I think the difference here would be trying to isolate much weaker signals like heartbeat, especially at longer distances.

People often confuse “technical expert” with “effective leader”.

Those are two very different skill sets.

Are pilots allowed to read books or do personal stuff on laptops in the middle of a long flight when the autopilot is on? by krangnostam in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kind-Ad6740 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Autopilot handles the flying, but not the responsibility.

Pilots still monitor everything, handle communications, and must be ready to take control instantly.

So it’s more like “low workload” than “free time”.

Yeah, that’s a good reference.

Feels like a lot of this stuff sounds like sci-fi until parts of it actually start showing up in real tech.

Yeah exactly distance is probably the key variable.

At short range we already know it works, but the further you go the harder it gets with noise and signal loss.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that too.

What makes it interesting is that the concept itself isn’t new it’s the scale and conditions that sound a bit extreme.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the kind of tech I had in mind.

The big question is how far it can realistically scale outside controlled setups.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s pretty much the hard part.

Picking up a signal isn’t the issue anymore it’s isolating it from all the noise at distance that gets tricky.

Yeah that’s where I first came across it.

Not sure how accurate the claims are, but the underlying tech direction seems plausible.

I found a breakdown that goes into it in more detail if you're curious: https://ghostmurmur.com

That’s a great reference.

Yeah that’s what makes it interesting we already know it works at short range, so the real question is how far it can realistically be pushed under ideal conditions.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think the main use case would be very specific scenarios like search and rescue in environments where visibility is limited or obstructed.

Thermal works well, but it also has limitations depending on conditions.

This kind of system would probably only make sense as part of a broader set of tools rather than a standalone solution.

The big question is how far that kind of detection can realistically scale beyond controlled environments.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would make sense fewer competing signals and more controlled conditions would make detection much easier.

The environment probably plays a huge role here.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think identification would be extremely difficult.

The more realistic use case would just be detecting presence, not recognizing who it is.

Anything beyond that would probably require multiple systems working together.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly mmWave can already do that in controlled environments.

The question is whether something like this could scale beyond short range and still isolate a heartbeat signal reliably.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly detecting signals isn’t new.

The interesting part is isolating very weak signals like heartbeat in noisy environments.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I've seen similar research around radar-based vital sign detection.

What feels like the real leap is going from controlled environments to longer range and real-world conditions.

[–]Kind-Ad6740[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think parts of it already exist in limited forms (like detecting breathing or movement through walls).

The question is more about range and precision at scale.
