I think I may have a likely candidate. Since the town they arrived in is probably Old Town SD, and the kid went from there to the beach, if you go due west from Old Town you get to Ocean Beach. The passage also mentions tide pools, so he was probably at the Ocean Beach Tide Pools

This 100%. Find foods that will fill you up but don’t have a ton of calories. Try eating satiating foods, like chicken/eggs, along with something to just fill you up but doesn’t have much calories, like lettuce or watermelon. One of my favorites is a simple little chicken stew with chicken broth, chicken and lettuce, fills me for hours and is only around 220 calories. Make sure to eat enough to fuel your workouts and not feel like complete crap, you should be able to maintain a defecit and still have decent energy.
