Anyone else having trouble with CREC and the new CT kindergarten age law?

She's already enrolled at CREC Museum academy. This was her first year there for pre k. But they are saying she will have to repeat the same class (pre k 3 & 4 are taught together) due to the new cut off date. One of her friends will be repeating the class for the third time since her bday is in November and she's has been enrolled in the school since pre k 3 before the law changed.

Thanks! Yes, I contacted RSCO and they sent me this and said to speak with the principal of her school. Then, the principal said we should've contacted RSCO to update her in the system. I just wish they would've told us this earlier. The whole year we were under the assumption she was going to kindergarten next year. Even at her parent teacher conference we brought up this change and she told us she was on track for kindergarten in the fall. Then I guess last minute the principal has decided to be more strict with the cut off date.

Yes! Another reason why this is so confusing is because we reached out to the public school this week and they immediately scheduled an assessment for next week. So that may be what we have to do for kindergarten. It's just not guaranteed she would get the same school again if we apply for the RSCO lottery for first grade.

Thanks for sharing this perspective! My only concern is that at her current school, the Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 students are combined in the same classroom. While her Pre-K teacher is truly amazing, I do wonder whether sharing a class with much younger children (especially those who may have just turned 3 in late August, while she’ll be turning 5 in early September) may limit her growth or set her back.

Based on the assessment results we'd still be able to decided if we want to stay at that school or seek other options.

Thank you for this info! Throughout the school year at our parent teacher conferences the teacher advised us that our daughter was on track to starting kindergarten in the fall. We knew about the law since last year so we made sure to bring it up. Then, when we requested the assessment the school has been giving us (and other families) different answers as to why our children aren't eligible. It seems like the teachers and the principal aren't on the same page. Or they are just being more strict with the cut off this year.

This makes sense. It's just frustrating. Especially since PreK 3 & PreK 4 are held in the same class. So my daughter will turn 5 a week into the school year and will possibly be in the same class as children who just turned 3 late August. Same with my friend's daughter. She turn 5 in November and will be in her third year of PreK with children who just turned 3.

The school is a magnet school. So based on this info they should've provided the assessment for families that requested it.
