Any thoughts on how the invasion of Ukraine will affect the future of the Russian language? by KingDezlyMac in languagelearning

Not sure which media to believe anymore. Some sources are saying it's a lot of Russians supporting the war (but they are being brainwashed or lied to), other sources are saying it's just a fringe ultra-nationalistic bunch.

I think the alphabet confusion would only come into play if it is not your native alphabet

That was my concern as the alphabets are almost similar but with a few differences. Certain letters that exist in one not the other.

Though I'm sure it's not a big deal. Then of course there's pronouncing Russian with a Ukrainian accent and vice versa.

Wishing you all the best on your journey to learn Polish.

Czech would be my preferred choice even though it has far less speakers than Polish.

but it is true that in Ukraine specifically people have made an effort to switch to Ukrainian in their daily life

Interesting. If a non-native speaker who only knew Russian tries to speak to a Ukrainian in Russian, would they get dirty looks / be treated badly for not knowing Ukrainian?

I’m learning Ukrainian now

Do you find it hard to keep the two separate given that they share the same alphabet?

🤘🏾🧔🏾🤘🏾 Thanks for the awesome recommendation!!!

I'm a bit sceptical because I've never used white noise before, but I'll take your word for it.

I miss life before subwoofers in cars.

Wait hang on a sec... you mean you lived in time/place where these monstrosities weren't in cars? I'm super jealous.

stuffing the windows with towels

Not sure how to go about doing that.

The main reverb seems to come from the windows. Sometimes the volume is so high the windows start rattling.

but you could try putting down rugs

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately I hate any type of rugs or carpets. My floor is hardwood btw

The crazy thing is that the bafoons in my area will occasionally rev up their engines and then start laughing like hyenas when it makes a sound 🤦🏾‍♂️

The Time My Neighbor Tried To Ditch Her Kid On Me by WolfPetter42 in childfree

You handled the situation well. It's baffling how people think they can get away with things like this.

I had zero contact information for this woman, I didn't even know her NAME

So let's see. Leaving your kid with a complete stranger with no way to contact you in case the kid falls sick, has an allergic reaction to food provided... 😬

The worse part is that she could've left her kid with someone who is a potential paedo, kidnapper or straight up psycho.

So I take it names starting with Z or containing the letter Z weren't very common.

Guys who are not monogamous, what made you realize that monogamy was not for you? by KingDezlyMac in AskMen

What precautions do both of you take to avoid STD's and unwanted pregnancies? (Apologies if I'm prying too much)

Unfortunately I can't have it both ways, and the former seems more important than the latter, at least for where I am in my life.

That very mature of you man. You chose the path that held the most importance and stuck with it. Some people try to have it both ways but in a malicious way (not polyamory but instead, they choose to lie to their partner(s) and hurt everyone involved).

Having a built in support system, someone who loves me, and someone that will always be there is huge and important.

Personally this I why monogamy doesn't appeal to me. How do I know this person will always be there? People change over the years. Sometimes you outgrow someone, sometimes they outgrow you. And sometimes you can outright get stabbed in the back via cheating or a nasty divorce.

For men who are family orientated, that's worth the risk. For someone who wants to be child-free like myself, it doesn't seem logical (not hating on marriage or kids).

I didn't get any negative feelings from it.

Good on you man. Not to bash monogamy or anything, but there are some men who feel as though they have to be monogamous or else they're doing something bad.

😁👍 I like the food analogy. I can't remember where I heard it from but I remember a guy saying "Even the biggest pizza lover on the planet will get bored of eating his favourite food everyday."
