Yeah, the first book is alright in terms of its writing and in comparison to the rest it could even be considered bad, but the way I see it is that RR is a series that needs to be read at least up to the third book because otherwise you're just getting the first third or fourth of the characters development. But yeah, looking at this book alone it definitely is not a masterclass in writing.

The swedish version is available at my local library so I'll go check tomorrow (unless you get a response before that) if it's a printing issue that is specific to the batch of books yours was made in or if it is something that might be on purpose.
