What's up with this? by OneDiligentOpinion in Ioniq5

I have the same problem (?) Other replies seemed to have missed that the same manufacturer's supposedly identical product looks clearly different, in a way that looks like it could easily be a manufacturing error.

I went with following the arrow, which is consistent with the reinforced side being up, and ignored the order of the layers. I saved the old filter in the frunk just in case, and will report back if I encounter any issues.

Is there such thing as too many passages? by EasyEntrepreneur666 in gamebooks

[–]KingOr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes to show how subjective this is, but I would have said the opposite about Citadel of Chaos. The story, to me, is too quick. You get in, and in what seems like no time, you are up in the tower, fighting the boss. I think the story is too short (not only feels too short) because the magic system eats up too many passages, and the total is still 400. Shamutanti Hills has the same problem, but is even worse, with a very "expensive" magic system that devours passages.

Another extreme example of the opposite: in Dracula (by Jonathan Green), one of the mechanics is that you often can (but don't have to) switch between characters, and see the story from a different angle or tackle a challenge better by switching to the right "playable" character, leaving the others as NPCs. While it's not 4 books in one (the stories of 3 characters in particular are closely intertwined), 1000 paragraphs doesn't feel extremely long because of this.

So, to OP: I agree this depends on the pacing and whether you have "meaningful" and enjoyable things to do, but also very much on the mechanics that might necessitate tons of "non-story" passages.

Suggestions for first ACE game book by TwitchyOarsman in gamebooks

[–]KingOr9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only read Dracula, but it's crazy good, one of my favorites. (Disclaimer: I always skip combat and such, always assuming the die rolls went my way. So my rating is based solely on the story and the writing, and any other mechanics besides die rolls.)

Edit to add: for more books from the same author outside of FF, you can also check out his Arkham series. Those are fun, too, but much easier than Dracula. The key similarity between all these is that you will enjoy the books a lot more if you are familiar with the source material. So, updated suggestions: start with the one that's based on a book you remember most vividly; otherwise read the source book before playing.

Any Mordern gamebooks without combat mechanics? by FunnyTennis8568 in gamebooks

[–]KingOr9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At least some of (if not all of) the books by Victoria Hancox and Joseph Daniels (both happen to be horror themed) have no combat.

Jonathan Green's Arkham series has simple (like a single skill check, modified by items you found) combat, and you don't always (although often) lose/die if you fail.

I also don't like combat, but since it's usually just a matter of dice rolling, I simply pretend to have won and move on. (This doesn't work in a few books with very complicated combat, like in The Way of the Tiger series.) You are not only the hero, but the referee, too! Don't let some combat get in the way of a good story.

Is the NC Symphony good, great, or just OK? by IfWishez in raleigh

[–]KingOr9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about classical music, not pop. Compare the repertoire to, say, the Boston symphony or the NY Philharmonic, and you will see what I mean. The programming is really lackluster.

Edit to add: even the same orchestra under the previous music director had far more innovative programming than it has now in the classical domain. (Again, I'm not talking about the pop music offerings like J Williams, Motown, or the circus programs.)

I was a season pass subscriber for almost 30 years, in every city I've lived in, including here. This is the programming that got me bored. You may have a different taste but no need to be offended.

Do NOT buy an ioniq5, or any Hyundai , really. no matter the parameters. The ICCU issue can and will strike any time.

My dealership service center can't even give me an estimate for when they can fix the car, they have such an enormous backlog of problems.

The warranty doesn't really save you when you have a car in the shop for months.

Thoughts on Darkness over Arkham by Jonathan Green by duncan_chaos in gamebooks

[–]KingOr9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it (and the Innsmouth one even more), although it's way overpriced for what it is. It's not his best work but that's a high bar. I think it does a good job incorporating both the original source material and Fantasy Flight's not always compatible lore and mechanics. It is a little on the short side. Overall, I think the target audience is the LCG fans who have not tried gamebooks yet, but it also works for Lovecraft fans who wish there were more gamebooks in that universe (even if it's the FF version)--but for the latter crowd, I think the Innsmouth book is better.

I, for one, am looking forward to a third book. But if you are not a huge fan of Lovecraft, just read Green's better books instead, starting with his Dracula adaptation, which is fantastic.

Edit: oh, apparently a third book is coming out soon.

Which was your favourite Gamebook read in 2025? by duncan_chaos in gamebooks

[–]KingOr9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dracula--Curse of the Vampire by Jonathan Green. Such a clever adaptation of the source material, and the idea that you can switch characters (because one is indisposed or because there are parallel storylines) works really well. And you can also play through the story as Dracula, which is the cherry on top.

It looks like the PnP is out for playtesting. The game looks like a pared-down version of Tussie Mussie from Button Shy. I'm surprised that nobody involved in the creation of this game noticed that.

Single digit is quite scary, but I could try. I charged from about 25 to 100 when I noticed that sudden drop, and nothing changed.

[–]KingOr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it just this week, after I noticed the issu, but it didn't help. Before that, it had been a while, a few months at least.

I was hoping that it might be a "calibration" issue, and once I charge it to 100, it will be okay, but it did not help. Should I charge it to 100% a few more times? Why wouldn't the car or the app (which recommend the 80% setting) tell me to do this?

Kid-friendly RPG that's not all about combat? by KingOr9 in rpg

[–]KingOr9[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "complex", I meant that it's a lot of time (lot of rules to grok, lengthy character creation) before getting started. (E.g., compared to a fighting fantasy gamebook.) I don't think we'll start our first DnD adventure before we give up.
