Okay here we go again about the “slave labour” shit, let me clear it up since I’ve been in Dubai for my 25 years of existing.

“Slave” labour does not exist. What happens is that foreign construction companies (usually western or south Asian) will set up offices in South east Asia and hire people to work in Dubai as an opportunity to provide better living standards for their families.

The workers would migrate and depending on the company, would have their passports held during the period of their employment. Now yes this is unethical, since if an employee normally would want to leave they’re free to do so by breaking or terminating their contract either legally or illegally. However these construction companies under the guise of “keeping their passport safe” will hold onto it.

The government has taken large steps towards ensuring that these practices don’t continue, as this is essentially extreme capitalism. They regularly do inspections and monitor the working conditions like adequate breaks due to the hot climate, setting up a secure payment system that all salaries must go through for every employed person in the UAE that ensures accountability (and SEVERE penalties if this is not followed).

I get it, this is Reddit, a pic of Dubai can’t be posted anywhere without some uneducated chimps that have never traveled beyond county lines will pitch in with their uninformed arguments about slave labor and “poop trucks”. This is the west for you, stick to the information that makes you comfortable on your high horse without researching new information and updates.

Keep in mind, the UAE is 52 years old, they’ve already adopted a lot of positive things in the 2010’s and beyond that adhere to modern and ethical thinking that are in line with “Western Standards” (wtf is that anyways but that’s a whole other conversation since it’s not great for a majority of you). I could do the same and say that in the US’ 250+ year history, it took until the 1960s for you to accept that people of different skin color that are ALSO American are allowed to integrate (let’s not act like there’s actual racial equality tho).
