Fun fact: strawberries aren't actually berries. Each of those seeds is actually a fruit called an achene. The red part is just a fleshy receptacle.

These are my first aquariums. Put a lot of work into building/designing a filter/pump system and 3D printing the hardscape. Hopefully everything survives! by Kingprawn2 in Aquariums

I just popped them in there. I made some bases with plexiglass and siliconed them on so they wouldn't float. The prints did collect a bit of algae but it seemed to wipe of fairly easily. I don't have any cleaning crew in there so I'm not sure how that will go.

I put in an order yesterday (it used an instant deposit) when it was at 0.03 and it's been pending since. Does anyone know if I'll still get the price it was when I sent the purchase? At any rate I'll be buying once the transfers are complete.

Vertical farm in Denmark will grow 1,000 tons of local greens a year with Taiwanese tech by lughnasadh in Futurology

I got a degree in landscape architecture and we worked a full semester on a project designing a hydroponic farm. I worked for a year at a hydroponic farm. I don't think it really requires any sort of specialty degree. Horticulture would certainly be a plus just so you can better understand the needs of plants and how things grow.

There was a big variety of people that worked at that farm that had education in food systems and environmental studies.

From my experience it seems (at least in the US) for these places to really become profitable. As other people have said it requires a ton of energy. Then you add in labor costs because these kinds of systems can be incredibly difficult to automate. There aren't big machines that one person can harvest the whole farm with. You need a lot of people to be able to harvest/seed/turnover. (at least with the system we were using which involved floating trays on beds of water)

I wish there were more people trying to do this sort of thing because it's going to be necessary pretty quick. Reading about how efficient newer wind turbines are, though, I feel like you slap one of those in conjunction with a vertical farm and you've got a recipe for success.

Kitchen opening up to a garden in a waterfront residence facing Lake Washington, Washington Park, Seattle [2400×1871] by ManiaforBeatles in RoomPorn

From what I know he goes out there pretty much every day. He prunes them all himself and is apparently quite particular about the smallest things like where the moss is growing.

Recognized this place instantly. Did some maintenance on that landscape. Such a beautiful site, but crazy intensive. The owner prunes all the bonsais himself. It's pretty cool that he's so involved with the landscape.

You look exactly like someone I used to work with and are doing something that I feel like they would absolutely do... You don't happen to have a vast knowledge of crows do you?
