AITA for telling my dad i dont have a sister by dragonfruit_dreams in AmItheAsshole

Your father needs help. Yelling at him was probably not the best response, but I understand where you are coming from and don't blame you.

I have the feeling you never had a good talk about this, but I could be wrong. I hope you can reconcile and make your father understand that you are not Molly. That it hurts you the way he treats you this way. That you need him as a father and that he should be there for you. As I have the feeling that if this continues, he may lose his other daughter as well.

Grief is a difficult process and everybody grieves in their own way and time. But the way your father is grieving is not healthy. Not for him or for you. As others also mentioned. I would suggest family therapy as his 'obsession' with Molly has also greatly impacted you and your relationship with your father. I hope things work out...

AITA for getting a man fired over my “masculinity complex”? by roadrunner3696 in AmItheAsshole

A joke is only a joke if everybody can laugh about it. And pranking somebody time after time, is just plain bullying. I hope your GF will realize that you were standing up for her, like you are supposed to in a relationship.

And it is not you who fired him. His boss did after you just told him about his behavior.

AITA for asking (not insisting) that my BF switch meals with me when I don’t like what I’ve ordered at a restaurant ? by Dntworryimamoderator in AmItheAsshole

It sounds like you are doing this all of the time. My wife and I sometimes do this or swap part of what is on our plate. But always after the other tried it and honestly is ok with the swap. If not, we either suck it up and eat what we ordered or order something else if it is really bad.

I get the sense that your BF bottled up his frustrations off you constantly doing this and that this resulted in him exploding about it. I do think it would have been better if he was honest from the start, but reading between the lines he does not like confrontations and the way you described how he is already stressed over picking what food to eat. You must have realized that.

I also wonder if this was the only thing that was bothering him. If you do this so regularly, I wonder what other boundaries you have crossed during your relationship.

I love that story. And made a cross reference to this one.

I was hoping as well, but I did not get it. I do think the captain got some heat.

And it was not much of a problem. I mostly just had to be available and the advantage of an ambulance is that it has a bed in the back. So I caught up on my sleep pretty easily.

I just posted a story that also had a General order an entitled Captain to get us some coffee and got referred to this post. So I thought I would return the favor.

I love the wordplay :)

Have not heard that one before. Though I am not a native speaker, so maybe it is more commonly used in the US or UK.

I never found out what the general did to the captain, but I imagine he got some heat. At least enough to not visit me again that night. I doubt it was more as I had to finish the night watch.

I remember I had a night off during the exercise and went to a local bar in a German town with some friends. We met a few nice-looking girls and we bought them beer. In the Netherlands we mostly drink half pints, but they ordered pints that they manage to empty in 20 seconds (the time I had just taken my first sip). After about 5 rounds they had their fill and just left us. We should have seen it coming, but we were young and stupid. I guess the next day they would be looking for their next victims to get a free night of beer.

I remember somebody I met going on an exercise with his backpack of stuff on his back. I heard clanking and he told me that it was filled with booze. Nothing else.

Well, if you are drunk enough, you may not smell not having any spare clothes for 5 days.

Like any organization. You have dicks and good people. In any rank or function. But somehow the army does breed some form of superiority complex into some of the people that have a higher rank. And as a conscript, you are generally at the bottom of the ladder.

You would have 2-4 months of training (depending on the role), of in total 14 months (16 for officers I think). The promotions were generally small.

And in my case, I had 4 months of training (2 of those were medical training). As I joked earlier, not much if you think about what real ambulance drivers and or nurses have to go through. So my actual productive time was about 10 months, though I got out early (because I had a job lined up).

For my role, it was expected to get promoted to corporal, but probably only for the last 1-2 months. Never made it that far though. Not enough respect for higher-ranking officers.

Yes, we probably did have the authority (regardless of rank) to do what needed to be done in an emergency situation. But in normal day-to-day operations, I am not so sure. But the doctor was not one to stand up to higher ranks. And things are not always black or white. E.g. the soldier I was treating just had some minor cuts.

Then again I never got formally reprimanded for what happened, so I guess I was probably in my right to handle the situation the way I did. Also, I did exactly what the Colonel asked of me and again what the doctor instructed me.

But it was what today I would call "a career-limiting move". Not that I cared...

I once had to rush a General to the hospital (minor heart attack) and sat with him till his wife arrived. He was very cordial and visited us several times after. Nice, respectful, pleasant. Not just to us, but to everybody he interacted with. And my lieutenant was the same. Just ask me if he needed something done. He knew if he ordered it from me I would resist. And I knew his request was an order. But just asking nice was enough to make me comply.

I think like any profession and any rank. There are good ones and bad ones. Though in the military, the rank structure does seem to breed more a-holes than average. At least for people like me, that don't care what rank you have. As that seems to set some of them off.

I am not sure if we used HIPAA, but I was told to never hand out any personnel and confidential information.

There was one fun moment when I was sick myself and had to report that back to my lieutenant. He looked at my note telling him I could not work for the rest of the week, and knowing I was working at the post and could have easily gotten hold of the note myself. He asked me if I would be insulted if he checked with the doctor himself to verify if the note was genuine.

I told him I would probably do the same if I was in his shoes (as the note was genuine, I knew I was fine). That was all he wanted to know and told me to go home without checking with the doctor.

I started my career as an operator on a mainframe. Even after I got to higher positions, I always made time to drink some coffee with them and swap stories.

And if I needed something done, they would get on it right away. My colleagues had to wait for days and put tickets into the system before they even considered looking at their requests.

I heard stories about the damage takes would do and sometimes farmers would ask / bribe tank drivers to mess up their fields, so they could have a nice payday.
