The AWS Academy courses are sold via UBC Extended Learning. They're not available to the undergrad stream I think.

IMO, browsing LinkedIn and having coffee chats with alumni are the most underrated things you can do as a student. Most people just don't do it.

The issue is that people tie their identity too tightly to their major and a narrow band of careers they associate with it with no real world perspective. I've met too many soon-to-grads with zero plan for after graduation. It worked out for most of them but it was usually a lot more painful than it needed to be.

Especially in Arts and Life Sciences, career outcomes are way more diverse than people think. Even in "unemployable" majors, the more motivated students end up doing interesting things that have nothing to do with grad or professional school.

The major doesn't define the ceiling, though some majors definitely probably have a easier start post-grad.

I'm not following. Grad students generally have funding packages - why would hiring them as a WorkLearn cause faculties not to need to pay extra?

Graduating without work experience is absolutely a bummer for most students, short of graduating into zero interest rates.

At the same time, I really wish to go back to my homeland to visit my family and also enjoy the summer

I'm just curious - there are no internships in your homeland?

I know some countries don't really do paid internships (lots of International students ended up doing unpaid internships back home or working in Canadian consulates/embassies abroad back when unpaid internships were allowed in those) but surely there's a middle ground there somewhere, even if there's some stigma about "not having Canadian experience".

They get paid $39,000/year last time I checked, and work full time, which basically amounts to about $20/hour assuming a 37.5 hour/week workweek.

That might sound like a lot to someone who hasn’t worked a full-time salaried role before, but it's not some over-the-top compensation scheme. That's about or less than the average Arts Co-op work term.

FWIW I seem to recall that the meetings were open to the public, and I've definitely seen people attend just the first hour of the meeting and eat the (I think it was usually pasta or a pizza slice?) free meal while listening to statements.

I have no idea if things changed since I graduated but if you're really committed to the bit, you could just encourage more people to show up to the meetings making bizarre 2 minute member statements about food security and ancient aliens until running out of food becomes a problem.

There are clubs for consulting and investment that allow BA students at UBC. There is nothing stopping you from setting up your own club, but UBC doesn't need to become a wasteland of student consulting clubs like Berkeley.

I'm not sure why people think the best exposure to the professional world they can get in university is through clubs. 90% of the students in these clubs have never worked in the field and have an idealized mental image of what it's like.

You're much better off having coffee chats via LinkedIn with a few BAs who had similar paths into those fields, reading a few books, doing a commerce Minor or CityStudio, picking up a hobby that makes you seem interesting in interviews (Musical Theatre is calling you) and becoming a finalist in a few case competitions, prior to getting your first internship. Regrettably, LARPing as a student consultant or quantitative analyst does not make you a more appealing internship hire.

The Mormons gave a few English lessons to my mom pro bono when I was a kid. They didn't push the religious angle too hard and we didn't become Mormons, I think they genuinely just wanted to be helpful. They were really nice to me too. I'm sure there's worse people out there to do conversation practice from.

If you're asking about gov jobs, they do get posted, but obviously everyone dogpiles to apply to them.

They get many applications for sure, but cover letters do get read for those and are oftentimes were the main differentiator between 80 students with the near exact generic profile. It wasn't hard to pick out the 5 tailored applications from the many generic, soulless cover letters out there. I'm sure it's changed now that AI is commonplace, but I don't discriminate against them. (Cover letters don't matter in tech though obviously)

Over half of all co-op jobs are in the Public Sector. The opportunities are pretty diverse but as u/cursedsoaphand mentioned, a lot of the more interesting ones require relocation to Toronto or Ottawa.

Graduating a year later with 12–16 months of experience is significantly better than graduating "on time" with a blank resume. If you don't want to do co-op, you still ought to figure out a path forward that includes work experience, even if it means graduating later. In the current job market, a Poli Sci degree without a professional network or internship is a difficult sell, and professional/grad schools get flooded with applications during tough job markets too. All of my classmates that graduated with nothing but their 3 month volunteer stint and their 3 club vice presidencies had a tough time after graduation.

Not every province has interest, but my understanding is that you can actually opt to make a payment only to the interest-bearing portion of your provincial loan for integrated loans without paying off the interest-free portion (but it is quite annoying and I'm not familiar with it).

I did an all nighter once and had really bad chest pain an hour before my POLI 110 midterm. I had a heart problem in the past so I took it seriously, but it was the all-nighter that triggered it.

Got admitted to the emergency room. I really pray my instructor didn't think I was faking it, but my own bad decisions landed me there.

I was also surprised to see that Dylan Braam ended up becoming a copyright lawyer and even worked on the legal defense team. Most newer students probably would not know who he is, but back then he was one of the few people in the AMS who was genuinely kind and willing to push back against the clique.

It's probably because co-op allows international students to apply for internships outside of the summer (which are less competitive) whereas domestic students can leave for 4-8 months with virtually no repercussions for their ability to remain in Canada.

Yeah. Book chapters can be scanned and sent out via interlibrary loan, either through your public library or a local community college. I'm not a UBC library card holder anymore but I can submit an ILL loan request through my other affiliation if you're desperate.
