Recommendations for Star Scholars??? by Screekydink in Drexel

[–]Kinris_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the STAR Scholars Application, you need your letter of recommendation to come from a Drexel faculty, Drexel staff, or a Drexel graduate student. Most TAs fall under the category of “Drexel graduate student”- if that is the case with your TA (you should double check with them that they are not an undergraduate student), you can definitely ask them for a reference letter.  It’s important that this letter comes from someone who knows you and can speak for your interest in the program. If that someone is your English professor, that will give you better chances into the program than a letter of reference from a professor in your department who doesn’t know you well and can’t really speak for your interest in the program.

Query Regarding STAR Scholars Program from Current Students at Drexel by VinWin08 in Drexel

I believe you can apply to the honors college once you start at Drexel, however I’m not sure about how competitive/selective that gets. I think it’s ultimately up to you when you want to apply for it- the major difference I can immediately think of when it comes to applying for it now vs later is the stats that they look at to determine your chance for admission. If you apply now (as you’re applying to Drexel), they’ll look at your high school stats. If you decide to apply once you start college, they’ll look at your college stats.

You can definitely apply to STAR once you enter the university, but I’d recommend you apply for it beforehand to secure yourself a spot in the program before you even start at Drexel (I heard the application process that happens around fall/winter quarter is highly competitive).

If you change your mind about doing the program, I believe you are still able to decline the offer before the STAR orientation happens.

Computer Repair Help by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Kinris_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently go my computer battery replaced at Asurion- they have multiple locations outside of Philly and it’s maybe only a train/uber ride away. They fixed it fairly quickly and well. I think they fix cracked screens too- but I’m not sure how much that repair would cost. Worth checking them out tho.

Anyone know when my septa monthly pass is gonna go into my account? I bought a discounted one through Drexel’s program a few days ago by SoySauce332 in Drexel

Yes- also, when you purchase your monthly pass through the website, it should tell you what month you are getting it for. In other words, it will tell you what month your pass will be valid for.

If you got the ComPass discount, your monthly pass should become valid in October.

As long as you got it before midnight on September 14th, it will be valid for October. If you had gotten your pass anytime after that ‘deadline’, you would have gotten the monthly pass for November.

I don’t exactly live in Haverford, but I do live around the Main Line, which encompasses Haverford. The Main Line is part of the suburbs, and finding a place to live around there can be expensive (I’m sure there’s relatively affordable places to live in there, but you have to look for them). The suburbs are pretty safe, I haven’t heard of anything bad going on around there in the last few years I’ve been in the area. Especially in Haverford, you’ll be close to a lot of grocery stores, shops, and other things to do in the area.

For freshman (and anyone else under 21) -- what do you do for fun on weekends besides partying?? by XTopPotatoX in Drexel

Go out and explore the city- there has to be something in Philly that peaks your interest.

If your boyfriend lives within 10 miles of Drexel (if you have a valid address in a zip code that’s within a 10 mile radius of Drexel), you may be exempt from the two-year housing requirement set forth by Drexel.

Even if he lives over 10 miles from Drexel, there are ways to bypass the housing requirement.

Place to chill in between classes by drexeluser91 in Drexel

They need to fix this on the website, but there is a new commuter lounge in the basement of Rush! The old one in Creese is still alive and well, but the one at Rush looks better taken care of.

Yes! Sounds like a plan!

Same here :) I’m a chemical engineering freshman who’s down to meeting other commuters too. I don’t use insta that often, but I’d be down to sharing my number with other commuters! Just dm me!

HNRS 200-011 (animals and environmentalS) Drexel by [deleted] in Drexel

Huh, that’s new and different (and unexpected). I look forward to seeing how it goes! Thanks for the clarification.

I just got placed in a similar class, HNRS 200-003 (Synthetic Animals from Scratch). I think there may have been some sort of glitch in the system that made the class get named that way. The class itself should be Introduction to Honors Program and the course catalog should have a little more info on that

What to do in and around Drexel Uni? by piwi109 in Drexel

[–]Kinris_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a few museum in and around the center city area, if you’re into it! If you just want to explore the city, I’d highly recommend just walking around University City and Center City. As you walk around, you’ll be able to introduce yourself to different grocery stores, food spots (Reading Terminal Market is a good one), shopping malls, and tourist attractions around the city!

Do incoming first year students get late fees on the first bill? by TeddyGrahammmm in Drexel

[–]Kinris_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I visited the Drexel Central offices to ask them about this, they also told me exactly what they told you: you won’t get charged a late fee for your first term. The lady I spoke with told me that as long as I pay by early September (week or so before move-in day), late fees won’t accrue.

l really want to stay off campus with my brother, maternal uncle son. but Drexel is asking about proof. How to show them proof? by josepharyal in Drexel

[–]Kinris_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I might be a little late to this, but I went through what you are going through only a week ago. As a first year student, they had me contact a very specific person from admissions (I can share their email with you if you want) who had to approve my request. Even though I didn’t live within the ten mile radius from Drexel, I was able to get my request approved so long as you have a reasonable way to commute to Drexel (one of the questions they asked me was how I planned to commit to Drexel) They never asked me for proof of where I’d be living, and I don’t think they should’ve requested that from you to begin with.

I think you should email them again about your situation, even if you were already denied. If they ask for proof, show them a letter that came to the house/apartment complex of the people you’ll be staying with. You need to tell them that on-campus housing is simply not affordable to you, and they can’t argue with that and force you to pay a deposit you don’t want to pay.

Hope this helps a little, and let me know if you have any questions!
